The Easiest 4000 m Peaks in the Alps

Your first 4000-metre summit does not have to be a hard climb. Several Alpine 4000ers are glacier ascents graded F (facile), and lifts in Zermatt, Saas-Fee and Chamonix cut the approach to a few hours.

These 20 are the easiest by the grade of their normal route, then by time. The quickest, Breithorn (about 2h 15m up) and Allalinhorn (about 2h 15m up), can be climbed in a day from the lifts; others need a night in a hut.

Easy does not mean safe: all of them cross glaciers, the air at 4,000 m is thin, and the weather turns fast. Go roped, with crampons and an ice axe, and with a guide if you have not travelled on a glacier before.

Questions

What is the easiest 4000 m peak in the Alps?
Breithorn (4,160 m): the normal route, the South flank and west ridge from the Klein Matterhorn, graded F, about 2h 15m up. Roccia Nera, Punta Giordani and Vincent Pyramid are close behind.
Can a beginner climb a 4000er?
Yes, with a mountain guide or an experienced partner. You need to be fit for a long day at altitude and to walk in crampons; spend a night or two above 3,000 m first to acclimatise. The guide brings the rope and the crevasse-rescue skills.
Which 4000er can you climb in a day?
Breithorn (about 2h 15m up), Allalinhorn (about 2h 15m up) and Roccia Nera (about 2h 30m up) are day climbs from the top lift stations, conditions and acclimatisation permitting.
