The shortest way up the highest summit between the Safiental and the Domleschg: from the Bus Alpin terminus and car park at Tguma (about 2,340 m) above Wergenstein, a mostly pathless line over the pastures of Sur Tuf to the ridge at point 2806, then scree and blocks along a broad ridge to the 3,056 m top. About 720 m of ascent.

About 65% of this line is approximate (no mapped trail; drawn from the terrain). Check it against a map before relying on it.

Start at Tguma above Wergenstein on the Schamserberg, reached by the reservable Bus Alpin in summer or by car with a road permit bought at the Lavanos turn-off. From the car park go west past the low top of Tguma (point 2404) and over the high pastures of Sur Tuf, then climb points 2532 and 2632 to the ridge saddle at point 2806. Paths are faint or absent for much of the way, with occasional cairns. From point 2806 follow the ridge north-west towards point 2962, over blocks and scree or by a traverse of the north flank above the upper Carnusa cirque. A broad back leads to the summit cairn and register (about 40 minutes from the ridge). The north summit (3,044 m) is 15 minutes further along an easy connecting ridge and is worth adding; the west side of the range falls 800–900 m in steep rock bands to the Safiental, so stay on the ridge in poor visibility. A longer alternative starts lower at Dumagns (about 1,840 m) and walks up the Fundogn valley to Alp Curtginatsch (2,272 m), then heads WNW without a path across the Alp Anarosa pastures and up a grassy rib to the same ridge: about 1,260 m of ascent and 2¾–3 hours up, 2½ hours down (thehighrisepages). Descend by the line of ascent.

Overview

At 3,056 m the highest summit between the Safiental and the Domleschg, higher than its better-known neighbour Piz Beverin. Gentle eastern pastures from the Schamserberg lead to a broad scree ridge; the west side drops in steep rock bands to the Safiental.

The Bruschghorn is the culminating point of the chain that runs north from the Splügen area between the Safiental to the west and the Schams and Domleschg to the east. Like many Mittelbünden peaks it has two faces: long, gently rising slopes and pastures on the east, and steep layered rock bands falling 800–900 m to the Safiental on the west. A north summit (3,044 m) stands a short walk along the ridge.

In summer it is a quiet alpine walk from the Schamserberg above Wergenstein, inside the Naturpark Beverin. The Bus Alpin to Tguma starts you at over 2,300 m, so the ascent is only about 720 m, but much of it is pathless pasture, scree and blocks with only occasional cairns. It sees far fewer visitors than Piz Beverin, which lies 4 km to the north-east.

In winter and spring it is a well-known ski tour (SAC ZS-) from Wergenstein, from the Cufercalhütte above Sufers, or as a traverse with a descent through the Carnusatal to the Glaspass.

Climbing Notes

Suitable for sure-footed hill walkers with some experience of pathless terrain; no climbing skills or technical kit are needed in dry summer conditions. Navigation is the main challenge: carry a map or GPS track and avoid the ridge in mist, where the steep west side is close. Allow roughly 4–5 hours for the return trip from Tguma (an estimate; no published time was found).

The Bus Alpin to Tguma runs only on certain days in summer and autumn and must be reserved in advance; drivers need a road permit from the coin machine at the Lavanos turn-off and space at Tguma is limited. Alp Nurdagn, about 30 minutes from the Tguma car park, serves food in summer.

On snowshoes or skis the route is good above Curtginatsch once the lower slopes are free of snow; the descent into the Carnusatal and the slopes of the Verdushorn are prone to slab avalanches, so only go when the avalanche danger is low.
