A steep, loose but short-lived challenge on a dolomite 3,000er: from the road end in the Avignatal (about 1,780 m) on path 4 past the Starlexhütte (2,119 m) to the foot of the summit block, then up a steep gully of scree, boulders and rock steps (I, rockfall) to a notch on the south-west ridge and the broad summit with a large wooden cross. About 1,300 m, 3–3½ hours up.

From Taufers im Münstertal (Tubre) follow the signs for Avigna on a narrow, steep road, gravel at the end, to the driving ban by a bridge a little below the Mangitsalm; there is a small car park for about ten cars at roughly 1,780 m. Follow the alp road (path 1) past the Mangitsalm (1,837 m) to a junction and turn left onto path 4, which crosses a meadow and climbs through larch forest to the Starlexhütte (2,119 m), a herders' hut, in about an hour. Above the hut the route follows waymarks, partly without a path, up the alpine heath and across slopes to a small col with signposts, then on a marked path to a second col in a rock rib, crossing the 'Schwarze Wand' shortly before the Fuorcla Starlex. Faint tracks lead into the steep gully that splits the summit block. The final 200 m or so climb dolomite scree, blocks and short rock steps (easy climbing, UIAA I to I+); it is tiring, often holds hard snow or ice early in the season, and it is hard not to dislodge stones, so keep groups close together and wear a helmet. The gully tops out at a notch on the south-west ridge; turn right through a short chimney-like section and walk easily to the broad summit plateau and its large wooden cross. The view takes in the Engadine Dolomites, the Sesvenna group and the Ortler. Descend the gully with great care. A recommended loop then crosses pathless ground to the Fuorcla Starlex (2,631 m), with a small lake on the Swiss side, and follows path 4 across the Stierberg pastures to the Stierberghütte (2,176 m); path 3 drops steeply to the forest road and back to the start (about 2 hours down, 12 km and 1,300 m in all).

Overview

A 3,075 m dolomite summit on the Swiss–Italian border at the southern end of the Sesvenna group, above the Avignatal near Taufers im Münstertal. A quiet hike-and-scramble with a steep, loose gully below a broad summit plateau and a large wooden cross.

Piz Starlex stands on the border between the Swiss Val Müstair and South Tyrol's Avignatal, south of Piz Sesvenna. It is the southernmost 3,000 m summit of the Sesvenna group and the highest point of the long ridge that forms the western side of the Avignatal. Unlike the crystalline peaks further north, its summit block is pale dolomite, broken and scree-covered, sitting on top of larch forest and alpine pasture.

The usual ascent starts at the road end in the Avignatal above Taufers and climbs past the Starlexhütte, a herders' hut, to the foot of the summit block. Most of the 1,300 m is straightforward walking, partly pathless; the difficulty is concentrated in the final 200 m or so, a steep gully of scree, blocks and short rock steps (T5, UIAA I–I+) where rockfall from other parties is the main hazard. The summit is a broad plateau with a large wooden cross and views over the Engadine Dolomites, the Sesvenna group and the Ortler.

The mountain is little visited. The common descent makes a loop over the Fuorcla Starlex and the Stierberg pastures.

Climbing Notes

Suitable for experienced mountain walkers who are steady on loose, steep ground and comfortable using their hands: about 1,300 m of ascent, 3–3½ hours up and 2 hours down. Wear a helmet in the summit gully and keep the group close together to limit rockfall; early in the season the gully can hold hard snow or ice, so microspikes or crampons may be needed and conditions should be checked. Above the Starlexhütte the route is partly pathless, so carry a map. There is no staffed overnight hut on the route; plan it as a day trip from the Val Müstair or the upper Vinschgau. Avoid the gully in wet weather or when thunderstorms threaten.
