A long, lonely mountain walk to the highest summit between the Gotthard and Lukmanier passes: a marked path to Lai Blau, then trackless T4 grass, slabs and scree past Point 2757 and Lai Verd to the Fuorcla Gannaretsch, and an easy rubble ridge to the top. About 1,360 m of ascent and 8 hours for the round trip.
About 100% of this line is approximate (no mapped trail; drawn from the terrain). Check it against a map before relying on it.

Start at the Lukmanier Pass (Hospezi Santa Maria, about 1,910 m). Follow the closed road west along the south shore of the Lai da Sontga Maria reservoir to the junction for the Cadagno and Cadlimo huts and Lai Blau (15 minutes), then the path along the west shore into the Val Rondadura, over the bridge and north-west across the pastures of Alp Rondadura to Lai Blau (2,409 m; T2, marked, about 1¾ hours). From the basin north of the lake climb steep, slab-studded grass slopes towards Point 2757, avoiding the final rock step by a traverse to the right and reaching the ridge through a small scree hollow just west of the point (T4, no path, a few cairns, about 1¼ hours). Descend about 120 m over scree and rock steps in front of the Glatscher dil Lai Blau to the basin below Lai Verd (30 minutes), follow its outflow up to the lake (15 minutes), then the crest along the lake's east shore and north past a small tarn at about 2,750 m to the Fuorcla Gannaretsch, the lowest point between Piz Gannaretsch and Piz Vatgira. Follow the west ridge, slightly on its south side, over fairly settled rubble and easy rock steps to the summit, which carries a weather station. Return the same way, including the counter-climb to Point 2757. Gipfelbuch.ch section times add up to about 4 hours to Lai Verd; Outdooractive gives 13.9 km, 1,360 m and 8 hours for the round trip. An alternative approach from the north starts at Lai da Nalps above Sedrun.

Route confidence 40%Overview
The highest summit between the Gotthard and Lukmanier passes, a 3,040 m gneiss top with about 930 m of prominence. No climbing on the normal route, but most of the way from the Lukmanier is trackless T4 rubble, so it stays quiet even in high summer.
Piz Gannaretsch rises north-west of the Lukmanier Pass, between the Val Medel and the Lai da Nalps valley above Sedrun, in the crystalline Gotthard massif. Lakes of different colours, Lai Blau and Lai Verd among them, and the remnants of small glaciers fill the basins around it. The summit carries a weather station and a summit register.
It sees few visitors: it offers alpinists no technical challenge and is a slog for ordinary walkers, with a marked path only as far as Lai Blau and then grass slabs, scree and rubble. In return you get a long, quiet day and a summit that you will probably have to yourself.
The usual summer route starts at the Lukmanier Pass and crosses a shoulder at Point 2757 before reaching the Fuorcla Gannaretsch and the west ridge. A northern approach from Lai da Nalps (Sedrun) uses a remnant glacier to the same col. In winter the mountain is a ski tour from the Lai da Sontga Maria dam or from Surrein via Alp Nalps.
Climbing Notes
Plan on 8 hours for the round trip from the Lukmanier Pass, with about 1,360 m of ascent including a 120 m counter-climb on the way back. Above Lai Blau there is no trail, only a few cairns, so good navigation in mist is essential; carry a GPS track. In settled summer conditions sturdy boots are enough, but take crampons when hard snow, ice or frozen ground is likely; snowfields linger in the hollows well into June. An overnight at the Hospezi Santa Maria on the pass allows an early start. Check the PostBus timetable for the pass before relying on it.
History
The first documented ascent was on 8 August 1895 by Dr E. Amberg and Dr A. Züblin, from the Lukmanier Pass via the west ridge.
