The popular summer route from the toll-road car park at Tjørhellhaugen above Kortgarden: an old tractor road and boggy, well-marked path through birch and pine to the lake Trollvatnet in the bowl beneath the summit, then a steeper cairned path up the ridge on the west side of the bowl, with some scree and easy scrambling, to the broad summit plateau. About 3 km and 950 m of ascent each way.

From Molde drive east towards Kleive and turn off for Osen and Kortgarden (from the south side of Fannefjorden, use the Fannefjord tunnel). At Kortgarden turn at the sign for the community hall (Grendahuset) and follow the road up to a barrier; the private road beyond costs 50 NOK (Vipps). Continue on gravel past a shooting range to a junction, turn left at the sign for Skåla and Trollvatnet and park a little beyond the start of the path at Tjørhellhaugen (about 195 m). The car park is busy on fine weekends. Follow the signs for Skåla along an old tractor road, cross a worn bridge before the bog Tjørhellmyra and walk about 150 m on boardwalks before the path turns east and uphill. It climbs through deciduous forest and dwarf pine beside the stream Tverrelva, crossing it at a pool beneath the waterfall from the lake, to Trollvatnet (also called Skålavatnet), which sits in the bowl ('skål') between Skåla and Skålaksla. The first 2–3 km are wet and muddy. There are good tent sites by the lake. From the lake take the path west and up the ridge on the right as you face the mountain. Small cairns mark the way, but the path can be hard to follow; from about 650 m it is partly steep and partly scree, with a few easy scrambling steps higher up and an impressive drop on the left towards Trollvatnet (no need to go near it). The ridge eases onto a broad, flat summit plateau with several cairns. Descend the same way, or continue over Skålaksla (1,076 m) for a round of about 9.6 km. Allow 2–2½ hours up and about 1½ hours down.

Route confidence 75%Overview
The highest mountain of the old Molde municipality, 1,128 m, in the middle of the Skåla peninsula between Fannefjorden and Langfjorden. A popular, well-marked hike past the lake Trollvatnet gives one of the widest views in Romsdal, from the open sea to Trollheimen.
Skåla (not to be confused with the far higher Skåla above Loen in Stryn) rises east of Molde on the peninsula between Fannefjorden and Langfjorden in Møre og Romsdal. Its name, 'the bowl', comes from the cirque that holds the lake Trollvatnet, wrapped by ridges running out to Skåla and its neighbour Skålaksla (1,076 m). With about 1,030 m of prominence it is one of Norway's major independent peaks, and the highest point of Molde as it was before the 2020 municipal merger.
The usual summer route starts at a toll-road car park above Kortgarden on the north side and is a classic local outing: boggy paths through forest to the lake, which makes a fine family goal in itself, then a steeper, cairned ridge with some scree to a broad summit plateau. The panorama is the reward: the Moldefjord and the open sea to the west, Trollheimen and the Sunndal mountains to the east, and the peaks of the Molde panorama across the fjord to the south.
In winter Skåla is a ski tour from Horsgård on the south side.
Climbing Notes
A comfortable day hike for anyone with mountain-walking experience: about 6 km return and 950 m of ascent, typically 2–2½ hours up and 1½ hours down. Wear proper boots; the first 2–3 km are very wet, and the upper ridge is steep with scree and a faint path. Avoid the edge above Trollvatnet. Carry a map or GPS for the summit plateau in fog. The lake is a good camp spot for an overnight trip. On ski, start at Indre Horsgård; the steep direct descent south from the summit needs stable snow and good skiing through tricky forest.
