A long ridge walk to the highest point of Uløya: from the ferry quay at Havnnes a signed path climbs through forest to the treeline at about 340 m, then a partly cairned ridge (Hamnnesaksla) and scree lead over Uløytinden (1,114 m) and a 967 m saddle, then 1.5 km north to Blåtinden. About 9 km and 1,150 m of ascent one way; cliffs and cornices line the east side.

Leave the car at Rotsund on the mainland and take the small ferry across Rotsundet to Havnnes (5–8 sailings a day in 2005; the last return can be early in the evening). Walk about 1 km along the road towards the village, past Havnnes Handelssted, to the signposted trailhead. A forest road continues for about 1 km past fish-drying racks, then a signed, good path makes long traverses up through the birch forest and leaves the trees near small cliffs at about 340 m. Above the treeline the path is sporadic and partly cairned. Climb directly up the ridge (Hamnnesaksla), keeping clear of the drop to the south-east, and pass right of point 1034. The terrain turns to boulders and scree near the top of the ridge. A short, fairly wide section around 1,000 m has a steep side to the west and, in winter and spring, a large cornice over the east face: give it a wide margin, especially in poor visibility. Kjelvågtinden can be visited for the view. Continue easily to Uløytinden (1,114 m), which has a summit box and one of the best views of the Lyngen Alps, descend to the 967 m saddle and walk about 1.5 km north to the cairn on Blåtinden. Approach the cairn carefully: the east side drops about 500 m to Blåvannet and Isvannet. Return the same way. In bad weather Petter Bjørstad descended the gentler west slope into Gahpervaggi (avoiding its steep upper part west of Uløytinden), reached the road at Skilet and walked about 3 km back to Havnnes. His solo spring ski ascent took 3 h 15 min up and 2 h 15 min down; a fast summer party reached Blåtinden in just over two hours.

Route confidence 49%Overview
The highest point of Uløya (about 1,140 m), an island at the mouth of Lyngenfjorden facing the Lyngen Alps. A long, easy-angled ridge walk or ski tour from the ferry landing at Havnnes over Uløytinden, with 500 m cliffs and winter cornices along the east side.
Uløya is a 78 km² island in Troms, divided between Skjervøy and Nordreisa municipalities, on the east side of Lyngenfjorden. Its mountains form a north–south ridge over Kjelvågtinden, Uløytinden (1,114 m) and Blåtinden, the highest. The east side falls in near-vertical walls of about 500 m to lakes such as Isvannet and Blåvannet; the west side is a much gentler slope. Because the sea is the key col, the summit's prominence equals its height.
In summer the ascent is a long but simple walk from Havnnes, the village by the ferry landing on the south of the island: forest path to the treeline, then a sporadically cairned ridge with plenty of boulders and scree. The ridge looks straight across to the Lyngen Alps, Arnøya and Kågen; many think the view from Uløytinden is slightly better than from Blåtinden itself.
Uløya is better known in winter. Lodges at Uløybukt run ski-touring weeks, and the 20 km 'Grand Traverse of Uløya' from Uløybukt to Havnnes over all three summits, and a loop of about 15 km and 1,200 m from Uløybukt over Blåtinden, are regional classics.
Climbing Notes
A long day for a fit walker: about 9 km and 1,150 m of ascent each way from the Havnnes quay, mostly on rough ground. Plan around the ferry from Rotsund and allow a margin for the last sailing back. Carry map and compass or GPS; the path above the treeline is sporadic, and in cloud the east-side cliffs are the main danger.
For ski ascents (best March to May; the late-spring freeze–thaw crust is often excellent) carry avalanche equipment and keep a wide margin from the cornices that overhang the east face, particularly on the ridge near 1,000 m. In bad weather the west slope into Gahpervaggi offers a gentler descent to the road at Skilet, about 3 km from Havnnes.
History
On 23 July 2019 Gosia Jurewicz and Jozek Soszynski from Poland climbed the first known rock route on Blåtinden's east face, 'Uløya, Welcome to' (360 m, Norwegian VI+, seven hours, no bolts or pitons), on rock they described as sharp, shattered and loose in places.
