A short mountain walk with a lift start: the Panoramabahn from Churwalden to Heidbüel (about 1,930 m), then roughly 650 m of ascent on a partly steep, narrow path past the Stätzertäli and Stätzerhorn chairlift top stations to the summit (2,574 m). About 1½–2 hours up.

Take the Panoramabahn gondola from Churwalden (1,245 m) to its top station at Heidbüel (about 1,930 m). A marked path, with a gravel track as an alternative for the first few hundred metres, climbs gently south-west past the top station of the Stätzertäli chairlift, then steepens in a wide left-hand curve over grass slopes that are ski pistes in winter. Waymarking near the start is patchy, so keep an eye on the map in mist. Above the top station of the Stätzerhorn chairlift (about 2,416 m) a few zigzags lead to the summit (2,574 m). A trip report puts the ascent at under 1½ hours; allow 1½–2 hours. The summit is the highest point between the Lenzerheide and the Domleschg and looks over the Lenzerheide, Oberhalbstein, Heinzenberg, Domleschg and the Alpine Rhine valley. Its east side carries ski-lift infrastructure. To make a round, continue down the ridge south to the Stätzer Sattel (about 2,330 m), turn left and drop to Alp Lavoz and Alp Stätz, then walk gently back up to Heidbüel (Rother's loop from Churwalden: 12.5 km, 4½ hours, graded moderate). Alternatively follow the narrower ridge north over the Fulaberg (an equally high twin top) and Fulhorn to the Windegga; that section is T3, partly exposed, needs the occasional hand and is awkward when wet. Check the last gondola down from Heidbüel (16:30 in the 2026 summer timetable).

Overview

A grassy 2,574 m viewpoint on the ridge between the Lenzerheide and the Domleschg, with about 1,000 m of prominence. A gondola from Churwalden leaves only 650 m of T2 walking to the top.

The Stätzerhorn (Romansh Piz Raschil) is the highest point of the long, rounded ridge that separates the Lenzerheide pass from the Domleschg and the Rhine valley above Chur. The municipal boundary between Churwalden and Domleschg runs across the summit. Its east side lies inside the Lenzerheide ski area, with chairlift top stations a short way below the top; the west side falls in grass and scree to Trans and Feldis. Some 900 m north-north-west along the crest stands the Fulaberg (Fulenberg), a twin top of the same height.

There is no technical difficulty on the usual paths, which are T2. What the mountain offers is a wide view for little effort: the Lenzerheide, Oberhalbstein, Heinzenberg and Domleschg, parts of the Surselva and the Alpine Rhine valley. The ridge walks that link it with Piz Danis and Piz Scalottas to the south, or with the Fulaberg, Fulhorn and Dreibündenstein to the north, make good longer days.

Expect company and ski-area infrastructure on the east side in summer. The ridge north of the summit is narrower and partly exposed (T3).

Climbing Notes

Any reasonably fit walker with sturdy boots can do it. From Heidbüel allow 1½–2 hours up and a little less down; the Rother loop from Churwalden with the gondola and a descent via the Stätzer Sattel, Alp Lavoz and Alp Stätz takes about 4½ hours. The waymarking near Heidbüel is patchy and the summit is often in cloud, so carry a map or GPS track. Check the last gondola from Heidbüel before setting out (16:30 in the 2026 summer timetable). Without the lift, the summit is a long day from Churwalden (about 1,330 m of ascent) or from Trans in the Domleschg.

The ridge traverse north over the Fulaberg, Fulhorn and Fulbergegg to the Windegga and Dreibündenstein is T3 between the Stätzerhorn and the Fulbergegg: narrow, sometimes exposed, with occasional use of hands, and slippery when wet. In winter the east side is a groomed ski area; snowshoe and ski-touring lines exist on the west side, but avalanche terrain and the ski-area rules need the usual winter judgement.
