The shortest walk to the summit: 4.7 km and about 1,190 m of ascent from the Schwägalp pass (1,350 m), up a cabled path through the Musfallen rock band to the Berggasthaus Tierwis (2,085 m), across the Karrenfeld limestone pavement and up the steep, stepped 'Himmelsleiter' to the summit buildings. About 3½ hours up.

From the Schwägalp pass (about 1,350 m), where the cable car valley station and a large car park are, follow the small road to the Gmeinenwisen alp huts. A steep path secured with wire ropes climbs through the Musfallen rock band on the north face, then a broad band of grass and scree leads to the Ellbogen and the Berggasthaus Tierwis (2,085 m), about 2 hours. This shaded north side holds old snow well into summer; before early July check that the path is clear. Above Tierwis, waymarks lead across a large karst pavement (Karrenfeld) with deep fissures and sinkholes to the Girensattel and the Blauschneelücke notch. The final climb, the 'Himmelsleiter', goes almost vertically up steps cut and fixed into the rock to the summit station, the transmitter tower and the Berggasthaus Alter Säntis just below the top. About 1½ hours from Tierwis. Normally most people ride the cable car down. From 1 May 2026 until late autumn 2026 the Säntis cable car is closed for replacement, so the descent must be walked: about 2¼ hours back to Schwägalp by the same route. The stepped sections queue on fine weekends; in autumn, ice on the Himmelsleiter and the Karrenfeld can make the route serious.

Overview

The highest peak of the Alpstein (2,501 m) in north-eastern Switzerland, topped by a transmitter tower, weather station and cable-car station. Marked T3 mountain paths with cabled steps reach it from Schwägalp in about 3½ hours or from Wasserauen in 5.

The Säntis is the culminating point of the Alpstein, the compact limestone massif of the Appenzell Alps on the borders of the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden and St Gallen. Standing well north of the main Alpine chain, it has more than 2,000 m of prominence and a view over six countries, from Lake Constance and the Black Forest to the Glarus, Bernese and Austrian Alps. The summit is heavily built up: a radio and TV tower, a MeteoSwiss station, the cable-car top station with restaurants, and the older Berggasthaus Alter Säntis just below.

For walkers it is an accessible but genuine mountain. The routes are well marked and partly secured with cables and steps, but they cross steep rock bands, limestone pavement and late-lying snowfields, and the weather on the Säntis is notoriously windy and changeable. The normal route from the Schwägalp pass via the Berggasthaus Tierwis is the shortest; the routes from Wasserauen via the Seealpsee and Meglisalp, and over the cabled Lisengrat from the Rotsteinpass, are longer classics through the heart of the Alpstein.

In 2026 the cable car from Schwägalp is closed for replacement from May until late autumn, so the summit can only be reached on foot and the descent must be walked too.

Climbing Notes

A T3 mountain walk: you need sure-footedness and a head for heights for the cabled Musfallen section, the Himmelsleiter steps and the Lisengrat, and fitness for 1,200–1,700 m of ascent (and the descent while the cable car is closed). No technical equipment is needed in summer. Snow lies on the north-facing Schwägalp route into July; ask at Tierwis or check recent reports before early-season walks. From October, ice on the steps and the Karrenfeld can make the routes dangerous.

Typical plans: Schwägalp – Tierwis – Säntis and back in a day (about 6 hours on foot in 2026), or a two-day traverse from Wasserauen with a night at Meglisalp, Tierwis or Alter Säntis. Start early on summer weekends, as the stepped sections queue and the Schwägalp car park fills.
