The usual way up Sunnmøre's best-known peak: from Skylstad near Øye in Norangsdalen climb 750 m to the self-service DNT hut Patchellhytta (818 m), then follow cairns west onto Slogen's east ridge and scramble the airy final ledges to the summit. Often done over two days with a night at the hut.

From the trailhead at Skylstad in Norangsdalen, about 1 km east of Øye, a marked path climbs steeply up Skylstadbrekka (about 4 km and 800 m of ascent, 2–3 hours) to Patchellhytta, a self-service DNT Sunnmøre hut at 818 m in the head of Habostaddalen. The hut can also be reached from Liasætra in Habostaddalen (toll road from Engeset near Stranda, 3–4 hours on foot), from Urke via Langesæterdalen, or from Brunstad in Sykkylven (about 4 hours). From the hut the route to the summit is unmarked but cairned and easy to follow: it heads west up rough slopes to Slogen's east ridge, where the direct path from Øye joins at about 1,200 m, then follows paths along the ridge to the ledges just below the top. The last stretch is airy and needs hands, but no rope; several lines are possible, so pick the one you are comfortable with. The summit has a large cairn and a logbook and looks straight down 1,500 m to Hjørundfjord and Norangsfjord. ut.no gives 2–3 hours from the hut to the summit, 6.3 km and 808 m of ascent for the return trip from the hut. Descend the same way, taking care on the upper ledges, which feel harder going down. Do not glissade the snowfields unless you carry an ice axe and know how to self-arrest: there have been serious accidents. A common day loop climbs the direct route from Øye and descends via Patchellhytta to Skylstad, finishing with 1.1 km on the road.

Overview

The best-known peak of the Sunnmøre Alps (1,564 m), a steep pyramid rising 1,500 m straight out of Hjørundfjord and Norangsfjord. Despite its looks it is a demanding hike with a short, airy scramble at the top, done from Øye or from the DNT hut Patchellhytta.

Slogen stands at the junction of Norangsdalen, Hjørundfjord and Norangsfjord in the Sunnmøre Alps of western Norway, between Ørsta and Stranda municipalities. From the fjord it looks like a sharp triangular pyramid; closer to, its east ridge is far less steep, and every hiking approach ends on it. The summit, crowned by a large cairn, drops 1,500 m to the fjord and looks across a jumble of jagged peaks, the small glaciers of the Brekketind group and the narrow valleys of Norangsdalen and Langesæterdalen.

The climb is a big day rather than a technical one. From the road at Øye the direct path gains about 1,500 m in some 3.5 km, with no easy ground until the ridge. The gentler alternative is to walk up to the self-service hut Patchellhytta and climb from there, which halves the summit-day ascent. Both routes finish with a few dozen metres of airy ledges where hands are needed; nervous walkers often stop about 100 m below the top.

Snow lingers on the upper slopes into early summer. In winter and spring Slogen is a classic, steep ski-mountaineering summit from Patchellhytta, usually finished on foot.

Climbing Notes

Good fitness is the main requirement: 1,500 m of steep ascent in a day from Øye, or a two-day trip via Patchellhytta (750 m to the hut on day one, 750 m to the summit and all the way down on day two). Sure-footedness and a head for heights are needed for the summit ledges, which are no harder than easy scrambling but exposed; take extra care in descent and in the wet.

The best window is July to September. In June, and after early autumn snow, snowfields cover parts of the upper route; carry an ice axe and know how to use it, and never glissade without one. Weather on the fjord coast changes quickly; turn back in cloud on the upper ridge.

Typical itineraries: a long day from Øye up the direct route and down via Patchellhytta to Skylstad (about 12 km, 7–8 hours); or walk to Patchellhytta in the afternoon, sleep there, summit early and descend to Øye. Patchellhytta is self-service and unlocked; some beds can be booked through DNT.

History

The first ascent is credited to Jon Klokk and his brother from Urke around 1870. The English pioneer William Cecil Slingsby made the second ascent in 1884 with Klokk and Ecroyd and called Slogen the prettiest peak in Norway. The first hut below the mountain was put up in the 1920s by the Englishman Charles Watson Patchell, a friend of Norway, after whom Patchellhytta is named; the DNT Sunnmøre hut was extended in 2011 and a winter safety hut added in 2014. The nearby Hotel Union Øye, opened in 1891, was a base for many early climbers and visitors.
