Sources differ: YDS class 2 (prominent-mountains.no)

A pathless, wild route from the Stornesdalen car park on Villmarksveien at the south end of Tustervatnet (400 m): along the lake and through dense birch and willow scrub to lake 768, over open ground past Litltinden to the outlet of lake 965, then about 200–300 m of steep slabs and grass ledges to the north ridge and a rocky crest to the summit. About 19 km and 1,460 m return; 4–6 hours up.

About 100% of this line is approximate (no mapped trail; drawn from the terrain). Check it against a map before relying on it.

Drive Fv73 between Trofors/Hattfjelldal and Bleikvasslia and park at the Stornesdalen car park below Storneshaugan, at the narrow southern arm (Sørbukta) of Tustervatnet, about 400 m. There is no path. Head west along the south-west shore of Tustervatnet through open patches of forest, crossing several small stream gullies, until the cliffs above on the left end (about 1.7 km); then climb through the first break in the wall. The vegetation belt is the worst part: dense birch, tall willow scrub and ferns hiding holes, slow and very slippery in rain. Following a GPS track from a previous party saves a lot of effort. Above the tree line continue to lake 768/769 (about 2 hours), then west along the slope south of the lake below Litltinden, over boulders, to the shallow outlet of lake 965, which is easy to cross. From the flat ground at about 1,000 m west of the lake, climb the steep east-facing slope directly west for 200–300 m on grass ledges, small gullies and slabs (slippery when wet; some easy scrambling), trending left towards the north-north-east ridge. Above about 1,300 m follow the broad, rough ridge south. A sharp ridge in a red-brown fault zone at about 1,400 m is bypassed on its west side. The last kilometre is flatter, with a series of false tops; one carries a large cairn that is not the summit. The main cairn is on the east side of the triangular summit area. Return the same way; in cloud the ridge is confusing.

Overview

A remote, rocky summit in Helgeland where Vefsn, Hattfjelldal and Hemnes municipalities meet, and the highest point of Vefsn. Pathless and rarely visited: a long day through dense scrub above Tustervatnet and up steep slabs to a ridge with several false summits.

Geittinden (South Sami: Gaajssnjurhtjie) rises west of the large lakes Tustervatnet and Røssvatnet in Nordland, on the tripoint of Vefsn, Hattfjelldal and Hemnes. With about 1,110 m of prominence it is ranked around 38th in Norway, and it is a first-order trig point. From the summit the view takes in Okstindan, Lukttindan, Visttindan and, to the west, De Syv Søstre above Sandnessjøen.

There is no path. The usual approach leaves Villmarksveien at the south end of Tustervatnet, follows the shore and then fights through a belt of birch, tall willow and ferns before reaching open ground at lake 768. Above, easy terrain under Litltinden leads to lake 965, and a steep slope of slabs and grass ledges gains the north ridge. The ridge is broad but rough, with a sharp fault-zone section that is bypassed on the west and several false summits, one with a large cairn.

The mountain sees few visitors; Peakbook lists fewer than 30 logged ascents. It is a satisfying wilderness day in fine weather, but unpleasant and confusing in fog or rain.

Climbing Notes

Allow 4–6 hours up and 8–13 hours in total for about 19 km and 1,460 m of ascent. Load a GPS track from a previous party: it makes the difference in the scrub belt and on the false-summit ridge. Wet slabs and moss are very slippery; choose a dry day. Insect repellent is essential in July and August. The steep slope to the north ridge needs some easy scrambling but no rope in summer; in winter it needs crampons and avalanche judgement. Cabins can be rented along Villmarksveien.
