1A long valley walk and one huge slope: from the signed trailhead east of Nordkjosbotn (about 40 m) the Balsfjord Turlag path runs up Kjusakdalen past a cabin at Laksvatnet and Havellvatnet; after about 6.5 km cross the river and climb almost 1,100 m of heather, moss and scree up the broad north slope, past a steeper band at about 1,240 m, to the summit. About 9.5 km and 1,500 m each way.

From Nordkjosbotn take the local road that runs east on the south side of the E6 and the river (signs for the school and church) for about 5 km to where streams from Kjusakdalen cross the road. The start is signposted, with a large car park about 100–200 m before it; the path follows Balsfjord Turlag's route from Kjusakdalen to Russeneset. The first 1.5 km is an excellent path on the east side of Kjusakelva to a trim-post box with a fire pit and a bridge. A good path continues to an unlocked cabin by Laksvatnet about 3 km in. Beyond, the path is fainter but marked with red paint and cleared through dense scrub; after about 4 km it crosses to the west side of the river, and around 100 m of planks cross the largest bog before the terrain improves past Havellvatnet. The red marks are easy to lose on the way back. After about 6.5 km, at the foot of the broad ridge (about 470 m), leave the path, cross Kjusakelva again and climb the long north-facing slope: almost 1,100 m of steady ascent over less than 3 km, on heather and moss up to about 1,200 m and scree above. A steeper rock band crosses the ridge above about 1,240 m; its steep part is on the left, so make an ascending traverse onto the gentler slopes immediately right (west) of it. Continue to the horizon ridge and follow it, well back from the edge, to the summit with two cairns. Return the same way.

Route confidence 59%Overview
Lille Russetind, despite its name the highest summit around Nordkjosbotn and Balsfjord's most prominent peak (about 1,265 m of prominence). A marked valley path up Kjusakdalen and a 1,100 m heather-and-scree slope lead to one of the widest views in Troms.
Lille Russetind (Lille Russetinden, 'the little Russetind') rises south-west of Nordkjosbotn in Balsfjord municipality, Troms. The name is misleading: it is higher than nearby Store Russetind (1,405 m) and the highest summit in the area, and with about 1,265 m of prominence it ranks around 16th in Norway. From the top, with its two cairns, the view takes in Senja, Kvaløya, Ringvassøya, the Lyngen Alps, Vassdalsfjellet, much of inner Troms and the mountains around Abisko in Sweden.
The usual summer route follows Balsfjord Turlag's marked path from the road east of Nordkjosbotn up the long, boggy valley of Kjusakdalen, past an unlocked cabin at Laksvatnet and the lake Havellvatnet. After about 6.5 km walkers leave the path, cross the river and climb a broad, relentless north slope of almost 1,100 m on heather, moss and finally scree. A steeper rock band at about 1,240 m is passed on its right.
There is nothing technical in summer, but the day is long: about 19 km and 1,500 m of ascent from near sea level. In spring the slope is a big ski ascent on hard snow.
Climbing Notes
Allow about 4–5 hours up and a full day overall for 19–20 km and about 1,500 m of ascent; fast runners have done it in 4 hours return. The valley path is wet and its red marks are easy to lose on the descent, so carry a GPS track. The upper slope is pathless scree; stay well back from the edge on the summit ridge. Snow lingers high on the north slope into early summer and spring ascents need crampons and avalanche judgement. July and August are best, with the midnight sun until late July.
