2The usual ascent: an old mule track climbs 1,400 m from the Zadnjica valley in Trenta to Pogačnikov dom on the Kriški podi plateau (about 4 hours), then scree and a protected step lead to Sedlo Planja and a short, steep cabled chimney to the summit ridge. About 6 hours up in total, usually split over two days.

Park in the Zadnjica valley off hairpin 50 of the Vršič road (paid; EUR 10 per day via EasyPark in 2025). Walk the road past holiday houses to the junction at Na placu (714 m) and on to the lower station of the hut's goods cableway (797 m). The marked mule track then climbs through forest above the Beli potok valley, across gullies with some rockfall risk and a short exposed ledge with a cable, past a small chapel to Na Utrci (about 1,500 m), 2 hours from the cableway. Steeper ground through dwarf pine and small screes leads to a spring below Kriški podi (1,877 m), Spodnje Kriško jezero and, a few minutes later, Pogačnikov dom (2,050 m). Allow about 4 hours from the car. From the hut drop slightly to a junction (right for Križ and Škrlatica), traverse left across scree to a rock step climbed with the help of protections, cross an exposed slab and continue over scree to Sedlo Planja (2,352 m), about an hour. Turn sharp right and climb natural passages, past a cave holding ice most of the year, to a notch; take care not to knock stones onto parties below. The old line beyond has been closed since a 2013 rockfall: follow the newer markings right to a short vertical, briefly overhanging chimney with cable, pegs and a ladder-like run of staples, where PZS advises that a self-belay kit is mandatory. A scenic ridge then leads to the summit, about 55 minutes from the saddle. Descend the same way. Hikers in 2025 and 2026 reported much loose rock above the hut, especially beyond Sedlo Planja, which makes the descent slippery; wear a helmet.

Route confidence 80%Overview
A 2,601 m limestone pyramid in the heart of the Julian Alps, between the Vršič pass and Triglav, called the 'royal' of the Julian Alps by Julius Kugy. The marked routes are long and loose, finishing with a short, steep cabled chimney; most parties sleep at Pogačnikov dom on the Kriški podi plateau.
Razor is the sixth-highest summit in Slovenia and part of the chain linking Triglav and Jalovec, rising between the Krnica valley to the north and Trenta to the south, inside Triglav National Park. Its north face drops about 1,200 m to Krnica; the gentler southern side overlooks the karst plateau of Kriški podi with its small lakes and the popular Pogačnikov dom.
Both marked approaches, from Zadnjica in Trenta via Kriški podi and from the Vršič pass along the south flank of Prisojnik, meet at Sedlo Planja. The summit section above the saddle is short but steep: natural passages, a notch rerouted after a 2013 rockfall, and a vertical, partly overhanging chimney with cable and staples (graded C by hribi.net) that some walkers call one of the harder protected passages in Slovenia. The rock above the hut is loose, and helmets matter.
It is a quieter objective than Triglav, with a wide view over the Trenta valley, the Kriški podi lakes, Triglav and the Martuljek and Jalovec groups.
Climbing Notes
You need via ferrata experience, a helmet and a self-belay set, and the fitness for 1,400–2,000 m of ascent. The usual plan is two days: Zadnjica to Pogačnikov dom (about 4 hours), then Razor (about 2 hours from the hut) and back down to the valley. Pogačnikov dom (PD Radovljica) is open from late June to 30 September and has a winter room; booking is recommended because it is one of the busiest high huts in Slovenia. Slovenian huts do not allow sleeping bags; bring a liner.
Start early: thunderstorms build in the afternoon, the chimney is exposed to stonefall from parties above, and the scree descent is slow and slippery. Snow usually covers the mountain from November to early June, and early-summer snow can linger in the gullies of the Zadnjica mule track and near the summit cave. Check the PZS list of closed paths (stanje-poti.pzs.si) before you go; in October 2026 it listed the Pihavec path on Kriški podi, which is not on the Razor routes.
History
The botanist Otto Sendtner made the first recorded ascent in 1842. Julius Kugy, the great explorer of the Julian Alps, called Razor their 'royal' summit. In 2013 a rockfall closed the original line above the notch, and the route was re-marked through the present chimney.
