The easiest way up Kariukhokh: from Verkhny Fiagdon (about 1,300 m) past the tower village of Tsmiti and abandoned Kadat, up a steep grassy couloir to the high valley under Dash-Sar, through a short grass-and-rock gully to the south-east ridge and up broad scree to the trig point. About 2,200 m of ascent; one long day for fast parties, otherwise two.

Take bus 270 from Vladikavkaz towards Kharisdzhin and get off at Verkhny Fiagdon in the Kurtatin gorge. Walk up past the medieval towers of Tsmiti and the abandoned hamlet of Kadat; a spring at about 42.8406, 44.2608 is the last reliable water and the usual first-night camp (there is a poor, silty swamp a little lower). Above it three grassy couloirs lead north to the high valley between Dash-Sar and Kariukhokh; most parties use the left one. The couloir starts at 20–25° and steepens to 30–35°; one variant (the middle couloir) has a short 3 m rock crack and a path across 35–40° grass, which a 2025 party rated the most dangerous part of the route. There is no water above the spring. The high valley lies at about 2,600 m. Cross it towards the big vertical chimney in Kariukhokh's south wall, then go right under the cliffs to a narrow grass-and-rock gully cutting the rock band (cairns mark the entrance; it is not visible from below). Climb it on its right side for about 30 minutes to the south-east ridge, where a large square cairn on a rock is a useful marker in mist. Follow the broad scree ridge up; the rocks in its upper part are bypassed on the right on steep scree (a 2025 report mentions two fixed cables here). The summit is covered in small scree, carries a triangulation point and drops away in sheer walls to the north. The Levkovsky guidebook describes the same upper line approached from the Kora-Arkhon pass road via the east ridge of Dash-Sar, 6–7 hours from the pass. From Verkhny Fiagdon a fast solo walker took 8 hours up and about 3 hours down a steep scree slope directly to Tsmiti; a 2025 party camped twice and needed about 5 hours from a camp in the couloir. Descend the same way, taking care to find the gully entrance in poor visibility. Several parties have reached the slightly lower east top by mistake; the main summit cannot easily be reached from there.

Overview

One of the highest summits of the Rocky Range in North Ossetia, a 3,438 m limestone massif whose north side falls in sheer walls while the south side offers a long, non-technical but steep grass-and-scree ascent from the tower villages of the Kurtatin gorge.

Kariukhokh stands on the Rocky Range (Skalisty khrebet), the limestone escarpment that runs parallel to and north of the Main Caucasus Ridge. It closes the Upper Fiagdon basin of the Kurtatin gorge to the west and is one of the range's highest points. The north and south-west faces drop roughly a kilometre in vertical walls; the summit is a scree dome with a triangulation point and wide views over the Ossetian plain and the glaciated main ridge. Local legend makes it the home of Falvara, the Ossetian protector of livestock.

The easiest line is from the south, starting among the medieval towers of Tsmiti and the abandoned hamlet of Kadat. It gains about 2,200 m through steep grassy couloirs to a high valley under the neighbouring Dash-Sar, then up a short gully through the rock band to a broad scree ridge. Nothing is technical in good conditions, but the 35–40° grass is treacherous when wet, the key gully is hard to find from below and there is no water above about 2,000 m.

Kariukhokh is a popular objective for experienced hikers from Vladikavkaz and is sold by local guides, yet it sees few visitors compared with the high Caucasus. Expect cattle and tall grass on the lower slopes and solitude higher up.

Climbing Notes

Good hill fitness for about 2,200 m of ascent is the main requirement. Most parties take two days: walk from Verkhny Fiagdon to the spring near Kadat and camp, then climb to the summit and descend. Fast, experienced walkers do it in a long day (about 8 hours up, 3 down). Start at dawn, carry 3–4 litres of water each from the spring, load a GPS track and avoid the steep grass in rain. Several parties have ended up on the lower east top by mistake. Basic scrambling experience is advisable; beginners should go with a local guide (guided trips cost from about 3,500 roubles). Check current travel advice for Russia before going.

History

The Russian Mountaineering Federation's route database lists a 3A rock route from the south via the north-west ridge, first climbed in 1994 by a party led by V. Ivanov. The easy southern route was described by Yu. V. Levkovsky from an ascent in April 1996.
