Approximate line — not for navigation

An automated check found that parts of this line could not be matched to mapped trails, so it may stray far from the real route. Use it for planning only, with a map and a guidebook.

A marked route (Til topps i Sørreisa) from the road barrier at the end of Rabbåsveien (about 165 m): a tractor road into Rabbåsdalen, a good path past the west side of Veidfjellet, then moss and heather up the north-west and north ridges to the summit block. About 8.5 km and 1,240 m of ascent one way.

From Bardufoss/Andselv take Fv86 west along Andsvatnet and turn at the sign for Rabbås; follow Rabbåsveien about 3.5 km to the barrier at the road end and park without blocking access (room for a few cars). Follow the marked tractor road into Rabbåsdalen for 1–2 km, then a good path climbs through open birch forest towards Veidfjellet (871 m), passing its west side about 100 m below the top and then dropping about 50 m to the foot of Hjerttinden's north-west ridge, roughly 6 km from the start. The north-west ridge starts at just over 700 m with a short steep section, then eases and joins the north ridge about 100 m below the summit. The ground is moss and heather, with cairns, paint marks and partial path. The last kilometre is a gentle ridge to the summit block, which looks awkward on approach but is straightforward following the marks; the register is a few metres below the top. The south side towards Hjerttindtjønnan is very steep. Return the same way, or make a loop: follow the north ridge for 0.5 km, descend the easy east ridge to a col at about 950 m, climb 130 m to Hjerttindtuva (1,080 m) and descend its steeper flank in zig-zags to rejoin the ascent path west of Veidfjellet. ut.no gives 16.7 km, 1,240 m and about 6 hours for the round trip. In spring this is a popular ski tour on a similar line via the saddle between Veidfjellet and Hjerttindtuva; the summit ridge is corniced and the summit block is climbed on foot.

Overview

The highest mountain in Salangen and Sørreisa, at the meeting point of three municipalities in inner Troms, with about 1,210 m of prominence. A marked route from Rabbåsdalen near Bardufoss climbs past Veidfjellet and up moss-and-heather ridges to a distinct summit block, with views to the Lyngen Alps and Senja.

Hjerttinden stands where Salangen, Bardu and Sørreisa meet, about halfway between Sjøvegan and Andselv in inner Troms, and is the highest mountain in both Salangen and Sørreisa. Its primary factor of about 1,211 m ranks around 23rd in Norway. Seen from the north it is a sharp summit block at the end of long, rounded ridges, with very steep slopes on the south side towards Hjerttindtjønnan.

The usual approach is from the end of Rabbåsveien in Rabbåsdalen, part of the 'Til topps i Sørreisa' programme, with marking along the way. A tractor road and good path lead past Veidfjellet to the north-west ridge, and moss, heather and a little rock lead to the summit. The neighbouring top Hjerttindtuva (1,080 m) can be added on the way down.

In spring it is a fine ski tour from the same trailhead through open birch forest and broad ridges, finishing on foot on the summit block. The summit view takes in the Lyngen Alps 70–80 km away, Senja, Andørja and much of inner Troms.

Climbing Notes

A long but non-technical day for fit hillwalkers: about 17 km and 1,240 m of ascent return, typically around 6 hours. The route is marked, but carry a map in cloud. For spring ski ascents keep away from cornices on the summit ridge and carry an ice axe, and crampons if the summit block is icy. No guide is needed.
