An easy but military-controlled ascent: from Akkaseter, the headquarters of the Blåtind firing range (about 165 m), a short way up the range road, then steeply to the saddle between Skardaksla and Skardfjellet (about 730 m) and along a broad ridge north-east and east to the summit. About 5.6 km and 1,210 m of ascent one way. Check firing notices first.

The whole mountain lies inside the Mauken–Blåtind military firing and training range. Before going, check the weekly firing notice on Forsvarsbygg's website and, ideally, phone the range office; at the road entrances, red warning lights mean entry is forbidden. Drive from Olsborg on the E6 via Fv854 towards Kjellmoen and the road to Aursfjordbotn, then the signed road to Akkaseter (about 165 m), where the range is run from and where you can ask about parking and the line to follow. Walk or ski a short distance along the range road above Akkaseter (closed to private vehicles), then leave it and climb fairly steeply to the main ridge at the saddle between Skardaksla and Skardfjellet, at about 730 m. Follow the broad ridge north-east and then east towards the summit; above 1,000 m it steepens slightly but is never difficult, with close-cropped grass and some boulders near the top. There are big drops close to the summit, so take care in cloud. The summit cairn holds notes from soldiers' 'Steinløpet' tradition. Descend the same way. In May 2005 a ski party took 4 hours up in storm-force wind and 1.5 hours down. With permission from the range office, it is sometimes possible to drive further in on the range roads and climb from Blåtinddalen (about 480 m), which reduces the ascent to about 930 m.

Overview

A broad 1,379 m mountain north of Bardufoss in inner Troms, with more than 1,140 m of prominence, lying entirely inside the Blåtind military firing range. The ascent over grass and boulders is easy, but access depends on firing activity and the range's rules.

Blåtinden, also written Blåtindan, rises between Målselvdalen and Aursfjorden, north of Bardufoss in Målselv. With a primary factor of about 1,145 m it is one of Norway's more prominent summits, but it is little visited because it lies within the Mauken–Blåtind shooting and training area, one of the largest military ranges in Norway. Akkaseter at its western foot is the range headquarters.

The terrain itself is gentle: close-cropped grass, broad ridges and a little boulder field near the top. The route described by prominent-mountains.no climbs from Akkaseter to the saddle between Skardaksla and Skardfjellet and follows the broad ridge to the summit; summer visitors with permission have driven in on range roads and walked up from Blåtinddalen in about 2 hours return.

The summit has big drops close by and is exposed to strong wind. A cairn holds notes from the soldiers' 'Steinløpet' tradition, in which recruits carry a stone to the top.

Climbing Notes

Physically a moderate half-day; the main preparation is administrative. Check Forsvarsbygg's weekly firing notice for Blåtind (Blåtind Nord, Sør and Indre), consider phoning the range office or duty officer, obey red warning lights at the road entrances, and stay out of impact areas marked with red triangles ('Fare blindgjengere' — danger, unexploded ordnance). Never touch metal objects. Snow lies until late May or June; in spring it is a ski ascent with avalanche risk on the steeper slope to the saddle.
