The only normal route left since a 2015 rockfall closed the south-east ridge: from the Voralphütte (2,126 m) over scree to the south-west rib at P. 2837, easy loose scrambling to P. 3251 on the south ridge, then the ridge to the summit with a short fixed-rope crux. About 1,300 m and 3.5–4.5 hours from the hut.

From the Voralpkurve on the Göscheneralp road (1,402 m) the hut path follows the Voralp valley past the Horefelli alp and Flachensteinen to the Voralphütte (2,126 m), about 2.5 hours and 700 m. From the hut a blue-and-white path heads north (shared at first with the path towards the Salbitschijen) onto the gentle Flüestafel plateau. Cross scree fields, marked here and there with cairns, to the foot of the south-west rib at P. 2837; either climb the rib directly from its toe or bypass it on the west by a snowfield and scree gully. Get onto the rib early rather than wandering on the flank. Easy, often loose scrambling on the rib or the scree ledges just below it leads to P. 3251, where it meets the south ridge (the faint path tends to reach the ridge about 100 m north of that point). The south ridge is a sequence of short, sometimes exposed climbs and downclimbs on stacked, plate-like rock. A snowfield lingers below the final summit block until late in the season. Just below the summit a fixed rope eases the crux (about 3c / III-), which can also be bypassed on the north side. Descend the same way, keeping to the south of the ridge back to the path on the west face; 2.5–3.5 hours to the hut. The rock is loose throughout, so take care not to dislodge stones onto people below.

Overview

The highest summit lying wholly within the canton of Uri (3,417 m), a reddish rock pyramid above the Voralp valley, also called Rot Stock. Its normal route is a long, loose scramble from the Voralphütte with a short fixed-rope crux.

The Fleckistock rises at the head of the Voralp valley, a side valley of the Göschenertal, between the Meiental and the Sustenhorn group. The Dammastock and the Sustenhorn are higher but stand on cantonal borders, so the Fleckistock is often called the highest 'pure' Uri mountain. The reddish colour of its rock gives it the name Rot Stock, and from the summit there is a wide view over the Uri and Bernese Alps.

It is a fairly popular peak, but not an easy walk. Since a large rockfall in 2015 made the south-east ridge from the northern Flüelücke impassable, the only normal route is the south-west rib and the upper south ridge: scree, easy but loose scrambling and a few exposed moves, with a fixed rope at the crux just below the summit. The long traverse from the Stucklistock (ZS) is the only other listed line.

The Voralphütte SAC (2,126 m), run by the SAC Uto section, is the base. With a night there the ascent is a manageable half-day; done from the road in one go it is about 2,000 m of ascent.

Climbing Notes

Suited to sure-footed alpine walkers and scramblers comfortable on loose T5 ground and short pitches of II–III. A helmet is essential because of loose stacked rock; carry a 30 m rope and slings to protect weaker members on the summit crux. In early summer an ice axe or poles help on the snowfields.

Typical itinerary: walk up to the Voralphütte in the afternoon (2.5 hours from the Voralpkurve), start around dawn, summit in 3.5–4.5 hours and return to the hut in about 2.5 hours, then 2 hours to the road. The hut is staffed in summer and for the ski-touring season from March; a hut sleeping-bag liner is obligatory.
