The Fiescheralp–Eggishorn cable car is being replaced by a new 80-person aerial tramway. Construction began in autumn 2026 and continues through the summer seasons of 2027 and 2028, with opening planned for December 2028. Winter operation continues; summer access may be restricted, the circular trail at the top station is closed and toilets are limited.

The way almost everyone goes up: cable cars from Fiesch via Fiescheralp to the Eggishorn top station (2,869 m), then a short, well-built path over boulders behind the Horli-Hitta to the summit cross at 2,926 m and its famous view down the Great Aletsch Glacier. About 60 m of ascent, 30–40 minutes up.
About 0% of this line is approximate (no mapped trail; drawn from the terrain). Check it against a map before relying on it.
Why? 1 check note
- ascent 92 m is 1.6× the net gain 56 m: the line probably detours down and back up (not a traverse)

Take the Aletsch Bahnen from Fiesch to Fiescheralp and the cable car from Fiescheralp to the Eggishorn top station at 2,869 m (5 minutes). The summit path starts just behind the Horli-Hitta restaurant at the station and climbs a well-built, rocky path over boulders to the summit (2,926 m), about 60 m higher. Allow 30–40 minutes depending on fitness; good footwear is needed, and the path is busy in summer. From the top the Great Aletsch Glacier curves away towards the Konkordiaplatz, with the Mönch and Jungfrau in view. Return to the station the same way. Fit hikers can continue on foot down a serpentine path towards the Tällisee, the Gletscherstube Märjela and the Märjelensee, and back to Fiescheralp through the lit Tälligrat tunnel (about 4 hours round trip from the Fiesch valley station).

Route confidence 80%Overview
A 2,926 m viewpoint above Fiesch with a cable car almost to the top and one of the best-known views of the Great Aletsch Glacier. From the top station it is a 30–40 minute walk to the summit cross; the Bettmergrat offers a T4 ridge alternative.
The Eggishorn rises above Fiesch in the upper Rhône valley (Goms), on the ridge that separates the valley from the lower Great Aletsch Glacier. The SAC describes it as a much-visited, excellent and famous viewpoint high above the glacier; from the summit you look up the ice towards the Konkordiaplatz and the Jungfrau and Mönch.
A cable car from Fiescheralp reaches a top station at 2,869 m on the south side, so the summit itself is only a short walk on a rocky, well-built path (T2–T3). For more of a mountain day, combine it with the Bettmergrat ridge from the Bettmerhorn (T4), the Eggishorn via ferrata on the neighbouring Fiescherhorli (K3), or a descent past the Märjelensee to Fiescheralp. The NE and NW ridges are mountaineering routes (up to T5/WS-).
Expect crowds on fine summer days. The cable car is being replaced between autumn 2026 and December 2028, and construction may restrict summer access to the top station in 2027 and 2028.
Climbing Notes
No special skills are needed for the normal route beyond sure footing on a rocky path at nearly 3,000 m; bring warm clothes even in summer. Check the last cable car down (16:55 in summer 2026).
The Bettmergrat (T4) needs sure-footedness and a head for heights; it takes about 3¾ hours from Fiescheralp. The Eggishorn via ferrata (K3, about 2 hours) needs a via ferrata set and helmet; the tyrolean traverse on its ridge may only be used with a mountain guide.
Summer, from mid-June to October, is the season for walking to the summit. The cable car also runs in winter for the Aletsch Arena ski area, but the summit path is then snow-covered.
