Sources differ: 3B (Russian), from the Dombay saddle (O. Schuster, 1914) (Caucasus route classification (alp.org.ua))

The classic of Dombay: from the Ptysh valley up a steep glacier branch (about 40°) to the Dombay (Fischer) saddle at about 3,630 m, then roughly 400 m of height along a gendarme-studded north ridge with cornices on the east side and short pitches of III–IV. Usually three days with camps at the Dombay bivouac and on the saddle.

From Dombay walk up the Dombay-Ulgen gorge past the eco-post to Russkaya Polyana (about 30 minutes from the LII meadow checkpoint), then about 2 hours to the fork into the Ptysh gorge. Pass the Ptysh waterfalls and the Ptysh bivouac sites and continue 2–3 hours to the Dombay bivouac (Dombayskie nochevki), the usual base camp. The border zone starts beyond Russkaya Polyana. From the base camp go east over scree to the right side of the glacier that descends from the north-west wall of Dombai-Ulgen. The 1930s guide prefers the glacier to the tiring right-bank moraine: above a steep section lies a gentle firn field; keep the rock that splits the upper glacier on your right and climb the branch below Maly Dombai (about 40°), avoiding the opposite slope, which is exposed to rockfall and avalanches. Cross the top of the dividing rock, traverse a firn slope and finish on rocks to the Dombay saddle (15–20 minutes from where you leave the snow). There is a prepared, sheltered bivouac platform and water on the saddle. The summit day follows the north ridge: about 400 m of height on a chain of gendarmes, with a 2,000 m drop to the east, cornices between the towers and bergschrunds on the west. A modern description (alplife.ru) gives about 300 m of unroped scrambling on the right of the crest, a short couloir, then a series of gendarmes passed mostly on the east side: a 6 m wall of 3B difficulty, a reddish gendarme with about 7 m of grade IV climbing, an overhanging black-and-yellow gendarme turned on the right on awkward sloping ledges (15 m, IV, frequent protection needed), several rope lengths of grade II, an inside corner of III, and finally three rope lengths of shattered ridge with large loose blocks, best taken on firmer but harder rock to the right. The last rope length is easy. The old guide puts the ridge at 4.5–5 hours for a fit party of four, and the same for the descent, which is by abseil along the line of ascent. Start by 02:00–03:00 to finish in daylight.

Overview

Dombai-Ulgen (4,046 m) is the highest summit of the Western Caucasus and the peak that gave Dombay its name, a three-topped rock and ice massif on the Main Caucasus Ridge above the Ptysh and Dombay-Ulgen gorges. Its easiest route, the north ridge from the Dombay saddle, is a serious Russian 3B.

Dombai-Ulgen ('the place where the bison died' in Karachay-Balkar) stands on the Main Caucasus watershed east of the resort village of Dombay, on the border between Karachay-Cherkessia and Abkhazia, and is the highest point of Abkhazia. The massif has three tops: the main summit (4,046 m), the west summit (about 4,004–4,036 m depending on the source) and the east summit (3,950 m), with the sharp Maly Dombai (3,758 m) on the north ridge. On the north and east it drops about 2,000 m in walls that carry some of the hardest routes in the Caucasus (5B–6A).

The normal route climbs from the Ptysh valley up a steep glacier branch to the Dombay saddle, where there is a bivouac platform, and then follows the north ridge over a chain of gendarmes to the top: no glacier plateau, but sustained, exposed rock climbing with abseil descent, loose blocks near the summit and cornices on the east side. It is a classic for Russian mountaineers working towards their third-category climbs.

The approach is short by Caucasus standards (one long day from Dombay to the base camp), but it lies in the Russian border zone and in Teberda National Park, so paperwork comes before climbing.

Climbing Notes

You should be comfortable leading Russian 3B (about AD+, UIAA IV) on loose, exposed rock in mountain boots, abseiling efficiently, and moving on 40° snow and ice. A party of two or four is usual; budget three days: Dombay to the Dombay bivouac base camp (5–6 hours), base camp over the glacier to the saddle, then a summit day of 9–10 hours from the saddle and back (the old guide gives 4.5–5 hours each way along the ridge). Start at 02:00–03:00.

Prepare the border-zone pass well in advance (allow about 30 days through the FSB Border Directorate for Karachay-Cherkessia), carry your passport, and pay the national park fee. The 1930s glacier description is outdated; ask at the Dombay rescue service or local guides about the current state of the glacier below the saddle. Hiring a local guide is sensible if you have not climbed in the Caucasus before.

History

The German climbers Oscar Schuster and Werner Fischer made the first ascent in 1914, by the route from the Dombay saddle; the saddle is also called the Fischer saddle. The first Soviet ascent followed in 1934. Hard face routes followed from the late 1930s: V. Budanov's north face (5A, 1938) and later lines of 5B–6A on the north, north-east and south walls. In 1960 a team of four led by Igor Erokhin died on the mountain.
