Sources differ: 2B (Russian), Central Diklosmta (4,285 m) by the south-east ridge, combined; A. Gadzhiev, 1957 (FAR route database (alpfederation.ru, route 33, district 2.10))

The approach used by Dagestani climbers: from the village of Gakko up the Gakko valley to a camp at the Achimukhchuni summer pasture, then a very steep south slope to the Diklos glacier that caps the summit, with crampons for the final section. Long and committing; graded 2B for the south-east ridge in the Russian classifier.

Gakko, the village closest to the mountain, is reached by road via Agvali, the centre of the Tsumadinsky district. From the village walk up the Gakko valley to the Achimukhchuni summer pasture at the foot of the massif, where shepherds summer their flocks, and camp; a 2022 party counted about 15 km between the village and the camp. From the camp climb the south side of the Diklos massif, an unrelentingly steep slope above big drops, to the Diklos glacier just below the summit; the 2022 party set off early in the morning and reached the glacier at noon. The whole summit is glaciated; crampons are needed for the final section, which took the 2022 party about an hour. The Russian classifier grades the south-east ridge of the central summit 2B (A. Gadzhiev, 1957); the 2022 account does not give a grade or describe the line in detail. Descend the same way. The 2022 party returned all the way to Gakko the same evening, arriving late at night. An alternative used in 2007 goes from the Korachgay sheepfold higher in the Gakko valley across the Gakko and Chero glaciers to the West Diklo pass (3,725 m) and up the rocky 'Merzbacher rib' to the 4,240 m Nodal summit.

Overview

A multi-summit, glaciated shale massif (4,285 m) on the Snegovoy (Pirikiti) range where Chechnya, Dagestan and Georgia's Tusheti meet. Rarely climbed; the documented modern approach is a long, steep two-day ascent from the Dagestani village of Gakko onto the Diklos glacier that caps the summit.

Diklosmta (Chechen Duklo-Lam, 'snowy ridge'; Georgian Diklosmta) is a many-topped massif on the crest of the Snegovoy range, the natural boundary between Chechnya, Dagestan and Georgia. Its highest points are Central Diklosmta (4,285 m), East Diklosmta (4,275 m) and West Diklosmta; the West Diklo (3,715 m), East Diklo (3,780 m) and Nisliya (3,870 m) passes separate it from its neighbours. Nine glaciers covering about 5 km² feed the Khulandoy, Chero and Gakko rivers. The rock is mainly Lower Jurassic shale and sandstone, loose and steep on the southern flanks.

Villages lie on all sides: Diklo and Ibtsokhi in Georgian Tusheti to the south-west and south, Khulandoy in Chechnya to the north, Khushet and Gakko in Dagestan to the south and east. The Russian classifier lists 1B, 2B and 3A routes in the massif; the central summit's south-east ridge is graded 2B. No summit route from the Georgian (Tusheti) side is documented.

This is remote, little-visited country on an international border, and both the Russian approaches and border rules make it a serious undertaking even though the technical difficulty is moderate.

Climbing Notes

For fit parties with glacier experience who are comfortable on very steep, loose ground and can navigate without marked paths. Allow two days from Gakko (camp at the Achimukhchuni pasture, summit and descent on day two) plus travel days; locals from Gakko have acted as companions on recent ascents. Carry crampons, ice axe and rope for the summit glacier. Acclimatise beforehand. Expect no mobile coverage, no rescue presence and border patrols; carry your passport and border-zone pass at all times.

History

The geologist K. N. Rossikova studied the mountain and its glaciers from 1885, and Gottfried Merzbacher made the first ascent in August 1892; a rock rib on the West Diklo pass route bears his name. Students of the Novocherkassk Industrial Institute reached the Nodal summit in July 1939, believing it a first ascent. A. Gadzhiev's party climbed the central summit by the south-east ridge (2B) in 1957. The east ridge of the east summit (1B) was recorded as a first ascent on 28 September 2018 in the FAR database.

Access & Permits

Permits
  • Border-zone pass (FSB Border Directorate, Dagestan)Required

The Tsumadinsky district borders Georgia and its high valleys are in the border zone; a pass is needed and checks are common. Russian citizens apply through the Gosuslugi portal. A travel blogger reports that foreigners are only given passes for areas a Russian citizen may enter with a passport, not for the strip next to the border.

Rules
  • The summit area is on the Russia–Georgia border (and the Chechnya–Dagestan boundary); there is no legal crossing. Stay on the side you entered from.
  • Foreign nationals may not be able to obtain a pass for the Dagestani approach at all
  • The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Russia
  • Georgian side: Diklo and Shenako in Tusheti lie below the mountain next to the border; no summit route from Georgia is documented
