The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel to Russia because of the war in Ukraine; its ability to help British nationals is very limited, particularly in the North Caucasus.

The easiest route on Burdzhula, a Main Caucasus Ridge summit above the Karaugom plateau, the largest high glacier plateau in the Caucasus: two days' approach from Dzinaga up the Karaugom glacier and the Gulari gorge onto the plateau, then a corniced ice-snow and loose-rock ridge over three shoulders to the top.

Burdzhula rises at the south-west corner of the western branch of the Karaugom plateau, on the Main Caucasus Ridge above the Karaugom gorge of North Ossetia. From Dzinaga follow the left bank of the Karaugom by road and then a pack trail through pine forest to a large meadow with narzan springs high above the Karaugom glacier (3–5 hours). Descend onto the glacier, follow its left side to a small icefall, cross onto the left-bank moraine past a lake and continue along the glacier to the side gorge of Gulari, where there is a meadow bivouac (8–10 hours from Dzinaga). Next day climb the left side of the Gulari gorge onto the Gulari glacier and cross it to a 150–200 m steep ice-snow slope (or smooth moderate rock to its right) in the couloir of the north-west buttress of the Western shoulder of the Karaugom massif, then a snow couloir and loose rock onto the buttress. Traverse a hanging glacier 250–300 m to the right to the scree saddle of the west rib, cross unstable scree with a slight descent onto the plateau above its icefall, and go round the big crevasses onto the plateau (8–12 hours from Gulari). The guide places the start bivouac for Burdzhula on the middle plateau of the western branch, below the mountain's east slopes; carry a tent, as the bivouac is hard to find in fog. From the bivouac go up snow (hidden crevasses) to the first low saddle on the north ridge, cross the bergschrund and climb the steep ice-snow left couloir (stone fall from rock islands on the right) to the ridge (cornice). Follow the snow ridge left to the first rock step: steep, very loose moderate rock with piton belays to the first shoulder. A gentle corniced snow ridge, a slope steepening to ice and 40–50 m of loose moderate rock lead to the second shoulder, then a nearly level and later sharp, steep snow crest (cornices) to the third. Continue on the broad, partly sharp ridge and finally a steep ice-snow section (piton belays) to the summit ridge and the top, 6–10 hours from the bivouac. Descend the same way.

Route confidence 40%Overview
Burdzhula (Burchula) is a 4,364 m summit on the Main Caucasus Ridge at the south-west corner of the Karaugom plateau in North Ossetia, standing well above its neighbours. The easiest route is a Russian 3A ice and loose-rock ridge, reached by a two-day glacier approach.
Burdzhula stands on the Main Caucasus Ridge (the Russia–Georgia border) between Saualkhoine to the north-west and Peak Anufrikov to the east, at the head of the Karaugom gorge, the south-eastern branch of the upper Urukh valley. Its north ridge runs out to the rock tower of Nogkau, and to the east lies the western branch of the Karaugom plateau (3,700–3,800 m), the largest high glacier plateau of the Caucasus, which drains through a rock gate between Karaugom and Nogkau as the long, broken Karaugom glacier. Burdzhula is the dominant summit of the plateau's south-west corner; the plateau's other peaks (Bivuachnaya, Bubis, Bokos, the Tsey-ridge summits) are mostly easier.
Only two classified routes exist, the 3A north ridge and the 4A east rib, both from the plateau bivouac. Expect long glacier days, corniced snow crests, very loose rock with piton belays and frequent fog on the plateau.
The upper Karaugom lies in Russia's border zone; a border-zone pass is needed, and the Georgian side of the ridge must not be entered.
Climbing Notes
For parties experienced on Russian 2B–3A (alpine PD+/AD) mixed routes with solid glacier skills: route-finding on a crevassed plateau in poor visibility, bergschrunds, cornices and loose rock. Acclimatise on easier plateau peaks first; Bivuachnaya (1B) is the guide's standard start-bivouac peak. Allow four to five days from Dzinaga: two days to the plateau, a summit day, and one to two days out, plus weather reserve. Arrange the border-zone pass in advance, register with the rescue service, and consider a guide familiar with Karaugom.
History
V. Lubenets and V. Radel made the first recorded ascent by the north ridge on 4 August 1946. G. Meshveliani's party climbed the east rib (4A) on 3 August 1972.
