Sources differ: 1B (Russian mountaineering grade for the route via the Tsimirtsy Pass and the west ridge from Borch) (K. Akhmedkhanov, Puteshestvie po Dagestanu)

A two-day ascent from Rutul (about 1,300 m): up the forested Lalaan gorge to the herders' farms and a koshara at about 2,350 m, then north to the Lekyrga ridge, north-west along it and west across the upper slopes to the snowy summit plateau. In mid-August a recent party found no snow on top. No published grade; descent by the south slope and the stream bed.

Deavgai is the highest point of the Gelmets-Akhty (Kyabyaktepe) ridge, which runs between the Samur ridge and the main Caucasus watershed in Rutul district. Its north side is a near-vertical wall of black shale with buttresses; the south side carries snow and cornices above a steep drop. The only recent first-hand account (takliono.ru, August 2022) starts in Rutul: a track leads south up the Lalaan gorge for the first couple of kilometres, then a path continues through forest past two cattle farms to the confluence of the Lalaan's headwaters at about 2,030 m, roughly 10 km and 700 m of ascent from Rutul (about 3 hours with a light pack). Herders use a koshara at about 2,350 m above the western tributary, where that author stayed two nights. On summit day the author climbed north to the Lekyrga ridge, followed it north-west towards Shididoglob (3,907 m, very rocky and not a good link to Deavgai), and at about 3,500 m traversed west onto Deavgai. He descended the south slope, then east to the stream bed and down it, which was about 15 minutes quicker than the ridge. No technical difficulties or times are given for this day. The classic mountaineering route described in K. Akhmedkhanov's Dagestan guidebook (graded 1B) comes from the west, from the hamlet of Borch (2,120 m) in the upper Akhtychay valley: a path climbs past the Deavgaika stream onto a grassy spur, then hard scree up to 50° and easy but steep rock to the Tsimirtsy Pass (3,633 m, 1B), which carries deep snow and north-facing cornices. From the pass the crest runs east over peak 3,770 m and five gendarmes to the lowest point of the ridge, then rock outcrops bypassed on the right with fixed ropes and ice pitons, and three steep steps along the edge of snowy rock and snow-ice cornices to the concave summit. Borch lies close to the Azerbaijani border and a border post, so that approach needs particular care with permits.

Overview

The 4,017 m high point of the Gelmets-Akhty ridge in southern Dagestan, a snow-capped dome above Rutul with a black shale north wall. Rarely climbed; the practical line is a two-day walk and scramble from Rutul up the Lalaan gorge, in a border district where a pass is needed.

Deavgai rises in Rutul district of southern Dagestan, at the geographic centre of the upper Samur basin, between the Samur ridge to the north and the main Caucasus watershed (the border with Azerbaijan) to the south. It is the highest point of the Gelmets-Akhty, or Kyabyaktepe, ridge and the second-highest summit in the district after Gokli (4,047 m). The summit is a concave, snow-covered dome; the north face is a near-vertical wall of black shale with buttresses and a large snowfield at its foot, while the south side drops steeply beneath snow and ice cornices.

The mountain sees very few ascents. The best recent account is a solo trip in August 2022 from Rutul, up the forested Lalaan gorge to herders' farms and a koshara at about 2,350 m, then onto the Lekyrga ridge and west to the summit; by mid-August there was no snow on top. Akhmedkhanov's guidebook describes a 1B mountaineering route from Borch via the Tsimirtsy Pass and the west ridge, with gendarmes, fixed-rope bypasses and cornices. The summit gives a wide view over the Samur basin: Dyultydag to the north-west and Shalbuzdag and Bazardüzü to the east.

The name is linked to a local legend: in 1837, when Russian troops searching for Imam Shamil asked villagers in Rutul where he was, they pointed at the mountain and said "De avgay" ("try and find him").

Climbing Notes

Plan two to three days from Rutul: one day to the farms and koshara in the upper Lalaan, a long summit day of about 1,650 m of ascent, and the walk out. Expect no marked paths above the farms, loose shale on the ridge and possible snow and cornices on the summit dome before August. Carry a GPS track, a tent and food; herders may offer shelter but cannot be relied on.

Rutul district is in the Russian border zone with Azerbaijan. Apply for a border-zone pass from the FSB Border Directorate for Dagestan well ahead (up to 30 working days for foreigners), and carry your passport. There are no huts, no organised mountain rescue nearby and only patchy mobile coverage; a local contact in Rutul is valuable. Many governments, including the UK, advise against all travel to Russia, which affects insurance and consular help.

History

The first recorded ascent is attributed to the naturalist A. Becker in 1872. In 1972 an experimental traverse expedition of the Central Council for Tourism and Excursions, led by G. Anokhin and K. Akhmedkhanov, climbed it along the Kyabyaktepe ridge as part of a traverse of three ridges of the Samur basin.

Access & Permits

Permits
  • Border-zone pass (FSB Border Directorate for Dagestan)Required

Rutul district borders Azerbaijan. Inside the 5 km strip along the border a pass is needed in addition to an identity document; outside it, ID is enough. A walker on the Lalaan route stays mostly north of that strip but a border post stands near Borch, and checks are possible. Apply with passport copies and the application form in person, by post, via Gosuslugi or by email to pu.dagestan@fsb.ru; processing takes up to 15 working days for Russian citizens and up to 30 for foreigners. Passes for foreigners are valid up to one year.

Rules
  • Russian border zone with Azerbaijan: carry your passport and pass, and expect document checks by border guards
