The easiest way to Pelister (2,601 m), the highest point of Baba Mountain, and the one the national park recommends in both summer and winter: a gravel road and a waymarked path climb from the Information Centre (about 1,370 m) past the Široka hut (1,950 m) and up the open Široka slopes to the Semafori junction (2,450 m) and the summit. 12.8 km and about 1,240 m of ascent; 3¾–4 hours up.

Start at the Pelister National Park Information Centre (about 1,350–1,370 m, the former villa of Lazo), reached by road from Bitola via Trnovo and Magarevo. The route follows the mountain road for roughly the first 8 km through Palisnopje and Čaparska Preseka, with a path cutting several bends, to the Široka mountain hut (1,950 m), a former hunting lodge now run by the Dimitar Ilievski-Murato mountaineering club, by the springs of the Čaparska river. Above the hut the path climbs the broad, open bowl of Široka (Široka livada), rich in bilberries and thyme, for about 500 m of ascent to the place called Semafori (2,450 m). Here the paths split: right to Pelister peak, left towards Malo Ezero (Small Lake, 2,180 m), and on to Partizanski vrv and Kozji Kamen. The final rocky ridge leads to the summit. The route is waymarked (with winter markings) and has no technical difficulty; the park describes it as suited to hikers with solid fitness. Return the same way, or combine with the Rocky trail to Hotel Molika or the path via Bolnici (the First World War Austro-Hungarian field hospitals) to Kopanki. A longer option continues from the summit to Malo Ezero (about 1½ hours) and Golemo Ezero (about 1 hour more), where the Murato hut offers accommodation.

Overview

Baba Mountain rises straight above Bitola in southern North Macedonia, and its highest summit, Pelister (2,601 m), is the third-highest point in the country. A waymarked path climbs open slopes in Pelister National Park, home of the rare molika pine, to a summit looking over Lake Prespa and the Pelagonia plain.

Baba (Macedonian for 'grandmother') is a compact granite massif on the southern edge of North Macedonia, between the Pelagonia plain and Bitola to the east and Lake Prespa to the west; its southern end continues across the border into Greece, where the range is known as Varnoundas. The highest point, Pelister (2,601 m), has a prominence of about 1,500 m and gives its name to Pelister National Park, the oldest national park in North Macedonia, which covers the upper mountain. A TV transmitter mast stands on the mountain.

The upper slopes are a mix of open grassland and the characteristic 'stone rivers', long boulder fields running down from the main ridge. Below them grow forests of molika (Pinus peuce), a five-needle pine surviving on only a few Balkan mountains. Two glacial tarns south of the summit, Golemo Ezero (2,218 m) and Malo Ezero (2,180 m), are known as 'Pelister's Eyes'. Brown bears, wolves, lynx and chamois live in the park.

In summer the summit is a straightforward but substantial hike of about 1,200 m from the Information Centre or Hotel Molika, which most fit walkers can do in a long day from Bitola. The finer, rockier option follows the main ridge over Stiv and Ilinden. Many combine the summit with the lakes, staying at the Murato hut by Golemo Ezero. In winter the mountain is a ski and ski-touring area, and snow can linger in hollows into July.

Climbing Notes

Good fitness for a 6–8 hour day with about 1,200 m of ascent is enough for the Široka route; the Rocky trail along the ridge needs sure-footedness on boulders, a few hands-on, cable-protected steps and some navigation, as the path is not always visible. Altitude is not an issue.

There is no public transport into the park: take a taxi from Bitola (about 25 minutes) or drive via Trnovo and Magarevo to Hotel Molika or the Information Centre. Start early in summer to avoid afternoon thunderstorms on the open upper slopes, and carry water. A popular two-day plan is summit and lakes with a night at the Murato hut by Golemo Ezero (book by phone).

In winter the Široka route, with winter waymarking, is the park's recommended line; expect deep snow, wind and avalanche-prone slopes, and bring snowshoes or ski-touring kit. Bears are present in the park; shepherds' dogs guard flocks on summer pastures.

History

No first ascent is recorded; the mountain has long been used by shepherds from the surrounding villages. During the First World War the Macedonian front ran across the region, and the Bolnici ('hospitals') path on the north side is named after Austro-Hungarian army field hospitals of that time. The Kopanki hut, built in 1938, was the main base for decades until it burned down in 2011. The Golemo Ezero hut and a monument at Kopanki honour Dimitar Ilievski-Murato, the first Macedonian to climb Mount Everest.
