The easiest way to the highest peak of the Šar Mountains: from Smreka hut at the Popova Šapka ski centre (about 1,800 m), a dirt road to the Vakaf shepherds' huts, then a marked path contouring below Bakardan and Mal Turčin to the saddle and a steep final slope to the summit tower. About 10 km and 900–1,000 m of ascent each way; 4–5 hours up.

Drive from Tetovo up the asphalt road with many hairpins to the Popova Šapka ski centre and on to Smreka hut (about 1,800 m), where the red-and-white waymarks begin. The summer route follows a dirt road for about 5 km south-west, past the 'Eagles Rocks' where it becomes a mountain path, to the Vakafski Bačila shepherds' huts in the pastures below Karabunar and Bakardan. Streams and springs are frequent in this section in early summer. With a 4×4 it is possible to drive this road and shorten the walk to about 6 km and 850 m of ascent. From the huts a path traverses the south side of Bakardan (2,700 m) and passes below Mal Turčin (2,702 m) to the saddle between Bakardan and Titov Vrv, where it joins the ridge route. A plateau with a helicopter landing mark precedes the steep final slope to the summit, crowned by a tower visible from Gostivar. Allow 4–5 hours up from Smreka. Descend the same way in about 3–3½ hours. Stay on the marked path: in mist it is easy to end up on the wrong top. Weather on the Šar ridge changes fast, and there is no shelter apart from the summit tower, whose water is not drinkable. Large flocks graze the Vakaf pastures in summer, often guarded by dogs; give them a wide berth. Snow patches and hard old snow are common in May, June and October.

Overview

The highest peak of the Šar Mountains (2,747 m), a broad grassy and rocky summit above Tetovo near the Kosovo border, crowned by a metal tower. A long but non-technical day from the Popova Šapka ski centre, through shepherds' pastures or along a panoramic ridge.

Titov Vrv ('Tito's Peak'), still called Golem Turčin or Turku i Madh ('Big Turk') by many locals and in neighbouring languages, rises about 21 km north-west of Tetovo in north-western North Macedonia, close to the border with Kosovo. The Šar range has more than 200 summits over 2,000 m, and since June 2021 the Macedonian part has been protected as Šar Mountains National Park. The summit carries a metal tower visible from Gostivar, 60 km away; its sister peak Mal Turčin (2,702 m) lies just south.

All the usual ascents start at the Popova Šapka ski centre above Tetovo, at about 1,700–1,800 m. The summer trail follows a dirt road and then a marked path through the Vakaf pastures, where large flocks graze in summer, and contours below Bakardan to the summit saddle. The winter or ridge trail climbs straight to Ceripašina and follows the crest over Karabunar and Bakardan, with constant views. Neither is technical, but both are long (8–9 hours return) and exposed to the fast-changing weather of the Šar ridge.

The mountain is busiest on the last weekend of May, when the Ljuboten mountaineering club organises its annual mass ascent; otherwise you may meet only shepherds. Access is easy by Balkan standards: an asphalt road climbs to Popova Šapka from Tetovo, an hour from Skopje.

Climbing Notes

Fitness for 900–1,800 m of ascent (depending on route) and an 8–9 hour day is the main requirement; the paths are T2–T3 in summer. Carry at least 3 litres of water, warm and windproof clothing, and a map or GPS track: the high pastures are featureless in mist and the ridge route is poorly waymarked. Snow patches and hard old snow are common in May, June and October, so an ice axe and microspikes are worth carrying outside high summer. In winter the mountain is a serious undertaking with strong winds and deep snow, recommended only for experienced parties with a guide; local guides operate from Skopje and Tetovo. A 4×4 vehicle can shorten the summer route considerably via the dirt road to the Vakaf shepherds' huts.

History

The peak was originally called Golem Turčin ('Big Turk'). It was renamed Mount Aleksandar in 1934 after the assassinated King Alexander I of Yugoslavia, reverted to Golem Turčin under Bulgarian administration during the Second World War, and was renamed Titov Vrv in 1953 in honour of Josip Broz Tito; the name was kept after Macedonian independence in 1991. The summit tower was vandalised in December 2022. The Šar Mountains National Park was proclaimed by the Assembly of North Macedonia on 30 June 2021, the country's fourth national park, covering 62,705 ha.
