2The standard Macedonian approach and the first stage of the High Scardus Trail: forest tracks and shortcuts from Staro Selo (890 m) to the historic Ljuboten Mountain Hut (about 1,620 m), then open pastures and a steep, stony final pyramid to the 2,498 m summit on the Kosovo border. About 20 km and 1,600 m of ascent round trip.

Start at the information boards at the top of Staro Selo (about 890 m), a village 1 km above the old Tetovo–Pristina road and about 5 km from the Jažince border crossing. Parking is scarce in the village; there is room about 500 m up the gravel road towards the hut. The way follows the 4×4 track through forest, cutting its bends on signed footpath shortcuts that are easy to miss, to Ljuboten Mountain Hut at about 1,620 m: 6.4 km, 730 m of ascent and about 2¾ hours. From neighbouring Vratnica a marked path joins the hut path for about 45 minutes more. The hut is also reachable by car from Vratnica via Novo Selo. Above the hut the marked path climbs north over open grassland past sheepfolds and up the broad southern slopes to the foot of the summit pyramid. The last few hundred metres are steep, on grass and loose stones, to the summit on the Kosovo–North Macedonia border, with views over the Polog valley, the Skopje basin and the Kosovo plain. The hut-to-summit-and-back loop takes about 4 hours. Descend the same way, or traverse west along the border ridge past Kozja Karpa (Goat's Rock) towards Lake Livadica and Brezovica in Kosovo (a green-border crossing that needs a permit). The upper mountain has no shade or water and is often in cloud; in winter it carries more than a metre of snow and becomes a serious mountaineering objective.

Route confidence 70%Overview
The free-standing grassy pyramid (2,498 m) at the north-eastern end of the Šar Mountains, on the Kosovo–North Macedonia border and visible from both Pristina and Skopje. A long but straightforward day hike from Staro Selo or Vratnica via the oldest mountain hut in North Macedonia, or from Brezovica in Kosovo.
Ljuboten stands at the north-eastern tip of the Šar Mountains, where the range drops to the Kačanik gorge and the Polog valley. It is not the highest summit of the Šar, but it rises apart from the main ridge as a clean, steep-sided pyramid, so it is a landmark from the Kosovo plain, from Skopje and from Tetovo. US troops at nearby Camp Bondsteel nicknamed it 'Big Duke'. Most of the mountain, its northern, western and eastern sides, lies in Kosovo; the southern slopes above Vratnica and Staro Selo are in North Macedonia.
The slopes are grass and pasture with rock outcrops, grazed in summer by sheep from the shepherds' folds below the summit. Glacial Lake Livadica lies under the border ridge to the west. The Macedonian side is within Šar Planina National Park (created in 2021) and the Kosovo side west of the summit within Sharri National Park. In winter the mountain usually carries more than a metre of snow.
In summer the climb is a hike with one steep section: the final pyramid of grass and loose stones. The Macedonian route from Staro Selo is the first stage of the High Scardus Trail and passes Ljuboten Mountain Hut, built in 1931 and recently renovated, with 50 beds and a restaurant. From Kosovo, the approach from the Brezovica ski area via Lake Livadica starts higher but has a rougher final climb.
Climbing Notes
Fitness for 1,600 m of ascent and 20 km in a day is the main requirement from Staro Selo; splitting it with a night at Ljuboten Mountain Hut leaves an easy 2¾-hour approach and about 4 hours for the summit and back. No technical skills are needed in summer, but the final pyramid is steep and stony (estimated T3) and the descent needs care. Fog and cloud are common on the upper slopes, and forest shortcuts on the approach are easy to miss: carry a GPS track. There is no water above the hut.
The summit lies on the border. Return to the country you started from: green-border crossings between North Macedonia and Kosovo require an advance permit, which is currently issued only for organised guided groups. Local clubs and agencies (PK Ljuboten in Tetovo, High Scardus Trail operators) offer guides.
The usual season is June to October. From late autumn to spring the mountain is snow-covered, with avalanche risk on the steep summit slopes; a winter ascent needs crampons, ice axe and avalanche skills.
History
The peak gave its name to the mountaineering society Ljuboten, founded in Tetovo on 23 March 1925, which started organised climbing in the Šar Mountains. The society began building Ljuboten Mountain Hut in 1931, making it one of the oldest mountain huts in North Macedonia. No record of the first ascent was found; the slopes have long been used by shepherds. The meaning of the name is not known.

Access & Permits
- Permits
- Green-border crossing permit (North Macedonia – Kosovo)Optional
Not needed if you return to the side you started from. Crossing the border on foot (e.g. summit from Staro Selo and descent to Brezovica) requires an advance permit listing every participant and the exact daily itinerary. For North Macedonia, permits are currently issued only to organised guided groups, not to individual hikers; for the Kosovo side, High Scardus Trail partner agencies handle applications.
