An easy but steep walk from the valley station of the Hochkössen gondola in Kössen (about 600 m) up forest roads, paths and ski slopes past the Scheibenwaldhütte and the Bärenhütte to the mountain restaurant below the summit, then along a ridge through dwarf pine to the summit cross. About 1,170 m of ascent, 3 hours up; the gondola to the Bärenhütte saves about 2 hours.

From the car park at the valley station of the Hochkössen gondola (formerly Unterberghornbahn) in Kössen, walk past the sports shop towards the youth sports hotel, where the path starts. A forest road runs east along the foot of the mountain beside the Großache; turn right onto a forest track that climbs in bends, then right again onto a steep path that crosses the track three times to an alpine pasture and continues along the forest edge and over meadows to the Scheibenwaldhütte (1,145 m, inn), about 1¼ hours. Follow the forest road briefly uphill, then a path that climbs steeply beside the ski slope until it joins another track. Turn right and wind up past the Bärenhütte (about 1,480 m, inn and paragliding launch, next to the gondola top station) to the mountain restaurant (Gipfelhaus, about 1,665–1,700 m), about 2½ hours from Kössen. Two paths lead from here and soon join; the route then follows a ridge through dwarf pine to the summit cross at 1,773 m, about 3 hours in total. Descend the same way, or from the Scheibenwaldhütte take the forest road and then a meadow path down the ski slopes to the valley station, about 2 hours. The view takes in the Wilder and Zahmer Kaiser, the Kitzbühel Alps, the Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge and the Chiemgau Alps. The south top, the Hefferthorn (1,735 m), needs easy climbing. The route is not recommended above the Gipfelhaus directly after fresh snow.

Overview

An isolated limestone massif (1,773 m) above Kössen in the Kaiserwinkl, Tyrol, the local mountain of Kössen and Kirchdorf. A straightforward walk on paths and ski slopes, or a short stroll from the Hochkössen gondola, to a summit with wide views of the Kaiser mountains and the Chiemgau Alps.

The Unterberghorn rises west of the Großache valley between Kössen, near the Bavarian border, and Kirchdorf in Tyrol. It is counted as an isolated outlier of the Kaisergebirge, with a double summit (the lower south top is the Hefferthorn, 1,735 m); across the valley the Fellhorn in the Chiemgau Alps reaches almost the same height. Both villages sit in pronounced basins, which makes the mountain stand out, and with about 1,000 m of prominence it is a fine viewpoint over the Wilder and Zahmer Kaiser, the Kitzbühel Alps, the Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge and the main Alpine chain.

The north side, the gentle ridge called the Unterberg, is developed for skiing, with the Hochkössen gondola (formerly Unterberghornbahn) and several lifts; the east flank and north ridge are pasture, and much of the massif lies in the Hefferthorn–Fellhorn–Sonnenberg landscape protection area. Paragliders and hang-gliders launch from near the summit.

On foot from Kössen it is a steady 1,170 m climb on forest roads, paths and ski slopes past two inns, finishing on a short ridge through dwarf pine. With the gondola it becomes an easy outing suitable for families.

Climbing Notes

No technical difficulties on the normal route; reasonable fitness for 1,170 m of ascent and sure footing on steep paths are enough. Allow about 5 hours return on foot from Kössen. The Scheibenwaldhütte, the Bärenhütte and the mountain restaurant offer refreshments when open. Directly after fresh snow the path above the mountain restaurant is not recommended. The Hefferthorn south top needs easy climbing and is only for those comfortable on rock. Because it is low and partly south-facing, the mountain is a good early- or late-season objective.
