Sources differ: YDS class 2+ (prominent-mountains.no (south route; north-west route described as easier))

The shortest summer route: from the summer farm Årdalsstøylen (about 640 m) above the east side of Breimsvatnet, a path to a small dam, then steep, pathless blueberry slopes to gentler ground above 1,000 m and a narrowing north-west ridge with easy scrambling to the large summit cairn. About 4.5 km and 850–870 m of ascent one way.

About 52% of this line is approximate (no mapped trail; drawn from the terrain). Check it against a map before relying on it.

Drive from Breim along the east side of Breimsvatnet to Årdal and up to the summer farm Årdalsstøylen (about 640 m), the highest farm on this side. Follow the path towards a small regulated dam, then cross boggy ground. The direct line loses height, so bear left (north-east) and climb steep, in places very steep, blueberry-covered ridges. Above about 1,000 m the terrain becomes sparse and alpine and the gradient eases. The final section follows the north-west ridge, which narrows towards the top and gives a little easy scrambling, though without real exposure in summer. The summit carries an unusually large, well-built cairn. Descend the same way. In winter the upper ridge can be icy and the drops to either side are significant, so take great care. The south route from Klakegg in Stardalen (Jølster) is longer: farm tracks and a forest path lead to a cliff band passed on its right with a couple of easy hands-on moves, then an ascending traverse on the west side of the upper rocks. A full traverse from Årdalsstøylen over Daurmål, Flategga and Klakeggfjellet to Klakegg makes a long, demanding day.

Overview

A steep-sided 1,446 m mountain between Breimsvatnet and Jølster, better known locally as Daurmål, with about 1,220 m of prominence. A short but steep, largely pathless ascent from the Årdalsstøylen summer farm leads to an easy summit ridge and a large cairn with views to Skjorta and Botnafjellet.

Svenskenipa, usually called Daurmål, stands on the border between Gloppen and Sunnfjord (formerly Jølster) in Vestland, between Byrkjelo and Breimsvatnet to the north and Skei and Stardalen to the south. With a primary factor of about 1,220 m it is among the most prominent mountains in Norway, and its steep flanks rise directly from the valleys.

The shortest approach is from Årdalsstøylen, a summer farm at about 640 m above the east side of Breimsvatnet. A path leads only to a small dam; beyond it the route climbs steep, blueberry-covered slopes and then gentler alpine ground to a narrowing north-west ridge. A longer route climbs from Klakegg in the south through forest and past a cliff band.

The mountain is a popular spring ski objective from the Årdal side, with a fine descent to the farm. In winter the summit ridge can be icy, with significant drops on both sides.

Climbing Notes

For fit hillwalkers comfortable on steep, pathless ground: about 850 m of ascent and 9 km return from Årdalsstøylen; one spring ski party took 4.5 hours in all. Navigation is by map once past the dam. Ski ascents need stable snow and avalanche skills, and crampons may be needed for the icy ridge in winter. The organised Indre Sunnfjord Turlag traverse to Klakegg is described as a long, demanding day.
