The usual day route to Alvdal's highest summit from the end of the Sølndalen toll road: a marked path past small lakes to Klettsjøen, then pathless and cairned steep boulder ground up the north ridge to the 1,690 m north-west top, a very steep drop to a 1,579 m saddle and a steep 250 m climb to the summit. About 6 hours return.

From the toll road through Sølndalen, park near Flatsetra at the road end (about 965 m) where the T-marked path to Breisjøseter runs close to the road. Follow it down to a lake, east across a bridge over the river and past several small lakes along the east side of Sølndalen to the north end of Klettsjøen (987 m), where the path forks at a sign. Turn left (east) across the narrow strip between the two lakes and follow the eastbound path. About 1 km beyond the lake, leave the path and head for the north ridge of the massif, aiming for easier ground to the left of the steeper, rockier slopes. On the ridge you join the cairned path from Follandsvangen, which climbs steep scree to the north-west top (1,690 m). From the north-west top it is very steep down to the saddle at about 1,579 m, then a steep climb of about 250 m east to the summit, with views over Rondane and to Søln in Rendalen. Return the same way, or descend the marked path on the south-east side to Breisjøseter. A 2003 party took 3 hours to the summit and 7 hours 20 minutes for the round trip including Veslsølnkletten.

Route confidence 75%Overview
Alvdal's highest summit (1,827 m), the main top of the Sølnkletten massif in the Alvdal Vestfjell between Rondane and Østerdalen. Steep boulder ridges and a deep saddle make it a demanding day hike with wide views over Rondane.
Storsølnkletten (also Store Sølnkletten or Sølnkletten) rises east of Sølndalen in Alvdal municipality, in the mountains between Rondane and the Østerdalen valley. With more than 1,040 m of prominence it stands well clear of its surroundings; its satellites are a 1,690 m north-west top and Veslsølnkletten (1,454 m). The summit looks west across Rondane and east to Søln in Rendalen.
There are three common approaches. From the end of the Sølndalen toll road at Flatsetra, a marked path and then steep scree on the north ridge lead over the north-west top and down to a 1,579 m saddle before the final climb (about 6 hours return). From Breisjøseter, a private staffed cabin at the south-eastern foot, a marked path climbs the south-east side in just under 4 hours return. The long loop from Follandsvangen takes in Veslsølnkletten as well (8–10 hours).
The terrain is non-technical but steep and rocky, with slabs and loose stones in the upper parts and exposure to strong wind.
Climbing Notes
Fit hikers need about 6 hours from Flatsetra, or a two-day trip with a night at Breisjøseter. Good boots and care on steep scree are the main requirements; the north ridge and traverse are only partly marked, so carry a map and compass. In wet weather the slabs on the south-east path are slippery. In winter the toll road to Flatsetra is closed, but the summit is an easy ski-and-walk ascent from Breisjøseter (winter season from about mid-March), often with little snow on the top.
