Routes
1The standard ascent of Slovenia's highest non-Alpine summit: an easy marked path of about 5.4 km and 600 m of ascent from the Sviščaki mountain hut (1,242 m), through beech and fir forest and dwarf pine to Koča Draga Karolina just below the bare summit. About 2 hours up, popular year-round.

Drive from Ilirska Bistrica on the 19 km asphalt road to the car park at Planinski dom na Sviščakih (1,242 m). Follow signs for Snežnik across a meadow and through forest to a group of holiday houses, then join a gravel road and keep left round Madragočeva dolina to the small chapel of Sv. Gabrijel. A parallel footpath climbs through forest, crosses the Lom road and traverses the slopes of Lom past a wayside cross, rejoining the road near Kapetanova bajta. The road ends at a turning area with benches and information boards where the dwarf pine begins. From here the wide marked path traverses right through dwarf pine with views over Gorski Kotar, the Kvarner islands and Učka, then enters a shallow valley between Mali and Veliki Snežnik. Keep right where the Matetova pot and the path from Grda draga and Mašun branch left. A steeper five-minute traverse leads to Koča Draga Karolina; the summit with its toposcope is a minute beyond. Allow 2–2¼ hours up and a little less down. The last slope below the hut is slippery when snowy or icy, and the open summit is very exposed to wind (including the bora). The route is a popular winter walk; take microspikes or crampons after snowfall. A variant returns over Mali Snežnik (1,694 m), adding about 15 minutes.

Route confidence 85%Overview
At 1,796 m, Veliki Snežnik is the highest summit in Slovenia outside the Alps: a bare limestone dome rising from an 85 km² forested karst plateau near the Croatian border. An easy two-hour path from Sviščaki leads to a hut just below the top and views over Gorski Kotar to the Kvarner Gulf.
Snežnik is the high point of a large, wild karst plateau in Inner Carniola (Notranjska), at the north-western end of the Dinaric mountains, where it merges with Croatia's Gorski Kotar. Beech and fir forest cover most of the plateau, giving way to dwarf pine and grass on the two summits, Veliki (1,796 m) and Mali Snežnik (1,694 m). The area above 1,450 m has been a protected natural landmark since 1964. The forests are among the best habitats in Slovenia for brown bears, wolves and lynx.
With the Adriatic only 28 km away, the plateau catches around 3,000 mm of precipitation a year, and the summit carries snow for much of the winter, hence the name ('snowy mountain'). There are no surface streams. On clear days the summit view, with a toposcope, takes in Gorski Kotar, Velebit, Učka and the Kvarner islands.
The usual ascent from Sviščaki is short and easy, making Snežnik a favourite year-round walk, including in winter, when the road from Ilirska Bistrica is ploughed. The exposed summit dome is the only place where conditions become serious: high winds, ice and poor visibility.
Climbing Notes
A half-day walk for anyone reasonably fit: 2 hours up and about 1¾ hours down from Sviščaki, 600 m of ascent on good paths and forest roads. Koča Draga Karolina is open daily from 15 July to 31 August and at weekends and on holidays the rest of the year in good weather (check by phone in winter); a winter room offers shelter when it is closed.
In winter the route is a popular snowshoe or microspike walk, but the upper slopes ice up and the summit can be dangerously windy; turn back if visibility is poor on the open dome, where the path is hard to follow in fog. Carry all your water. Bears live on the plateau: keep dogs on a lead and make noise in dense forest. The road beyond Sviščaki towards Mašun and Kozarišče is gravel and usually closed in winter.
History
Johann Weikhard von Valvasor described the mountain in 1689 as 'completely pointy and a true sky drill', and the botanist Heinrich Freyer studied its flora in the 19th century. The summit hut grew from a shelter set up by Drago Karolin, a professor who led the Snežnik Ilirska Bistrica mountaineering club; it was enlarged between 1977 and 1994 and named after him. Snežnik is the high point of the National Liberation War Courier and Signal Operator Trail.
