Routes
1There is no waymarked footpath to the top of Terceira: the usual way up is the narrow, paved Estrada da Serra de Santa Bárbara, which climbs 5.6 km and about 520 m from the regional road beside the Serra de Santa Bárbara Interpretation Centre (about 500 m) to the antennas, trig point and viewpoints on the summit (1,021 m). Most visitors drive it; walking takes roughly 2–2½ hours up.

Start at the junction of the Estrada da Serra de Santa Bárbara with the regional road ER5-2A ('Estrada das Doze'), next to the Serra de Santa Bárbara Interpretation Centre above the village of Santa Bárbara (about 500 m). The visitor centre explains the geology and natural history of Terceira Natural Park and is a good place to check conditions. Follow the narrow asphalt road north as it winds steeply through Japanese cedar plantations and then native cloud forest of Azores juniper and heather. The surface is poor in places; on foot, keep to the side, as cars use it to reach the summit. After about 5.6 km the road ends at a turning circle and two small car parks among the masts, radar dome and television tower on the southern rim of the volcano. The trig point (Santa Bárbara, 1,022.6 m at the top of the pillar) is beside the masts. A short footway and wooden steps lead to the viewpoints, which look north into the large caldera, a protected area of cloud forest, bogs and small lakes such as Lagoa Negra, and, on a clear day, across to São Jorge, Pico and Graciosa. Return the same way. Paths into the caldera below the viewpoints are signed as closed ('Passagem Proibida'); do not leave the road and the marked viewpoint paths. The summit is the island's main cloud-condensation zone and is often in fog when the coast is sunny; check the webcams or look up from Angra before going.

Route confidence 60%Overview
The highest point of Terceira (1,021 m), on the rim of a large, forested caldera at the west end of the island. A paved road climbs to the antennas and viewpoints on top, which look over native cloud forest and bogs and, on a clear day, to São Jorge, Pico and Graciosa.
Serra de Santa Bárbara is the dormant volcano that forms the western end of Terceira. Its broad summit holds a caldera filled with Azorean cloud forest, peat bogs and small lakes such as Lagoa Negra, protected as the Serra de Santa Bárbara nature reserve (about 1,100 ha) within Terceira Natural Park and the Natura 2000 site Serra de Santa Bárbara e Pico Alto. The forest is dominated by the endemic Azores juniper (cedro-do-mato), with heather and holly.
The top is not a wild place: the highest point, on the southern rim, carries telecommunications masts, a television tower, a weather radar and a trig point, reached by a narrow paved road with two small car parks. A short footway and wooden steps lead to viewpoints over the caldera. This is the island's main zone of cloud condensation, which feeds the water supply for western Terceira, so expect fog more often than not.
When it clears, the view takes in the whole of Terceira and the neighbouring islands of the central group. The Serra de Santa Bárbara Interpretation Centre at the foot of the summit road explains the island's volcanic origins and the natural park.
Climbing Notes
Most visitors drive to the summit car parks and walk a few minutes to the viewpoints. On foot, the 5.6 km summit road from the interpretation centre gains about 520 m and takes roughly 2–2½ hours up; walk facing traffic and be visible in fog. There is no official footpath to the top, and paths into the caldera are signed as closed.
Go on a clear day: look at the mountain from Angra do Heroísmo or check a webcam before setting out. Even in summer the summit is cooler and windier than the coast, so take a windproof layer. May to September has the best chance of views.
