The shortest and most popular way up Chelmos: from the Kalavryta Ski Centre (about 1,700 m) up beside the pistes to the closed refuge at Pouliou Vrysi (2,100 m), onto the Neraidorachi ridge by the Aristarchos telescope, then south over the high plateau to Psili Korifi. About 10 km and 800 m of ascent there and back.

Start from the car park of the Kalavryta Ski Centre, about 14 km by road south-east of Kalavryta. Follow the ski lifts briefly, then leave them to the left and climb towards the Chelmos refuge at Pouliou Vrysi (2,100 m), about 1½ hours from the car park. The refuge is a large building near the spring of the same name; it has been closed for years and offers no service or shelter you can count on. Above the refuge a steep slope, marked only by faded red paint, leads up beneath a rock band (skirt it on the right) to the Neraidorachi ridge and the Helmos Observatory with the 2.3 m Aristarchos telescope (about 2,340 m), roughly an hour from the refuge. From here follow the broad ridge and the upper plateau (Epano Kampos, past the Mavrolimni area) south to Psili Korifi (2,355 m). The path is faint in places on this last stretch and the ground is rough limestone. Descend the same way, or follow the Neraidorachi ridge north (rough track, steep drop on the east side), or drop east to the Styx waterfall for a long, very steep loop. Outside the ski season the Achilleas and Styx lifts have carried walkers to the top of the ski area at Neraidorachi (about 2,340 m), which cuts the ascent to roughly the ridge walk to the summit. In winter and spring the slopes below Neraidorachi hold deep snow and the route becomes a snow climb needing crampons and an ice axe.

Overview

Psili Korifi (2,355 m) is the highest point of Chelmos (Aroania), the third-highest mountain in the Peloponnese, above Kalavryta. A ski centre and an observatory on the ridge make it one of the easiest 2,300 m summits in southern Greece to reach.

Chelmos, also called Aroania, is a large limestone massif in south-eastern Achaea, between Erymanthos to the west and Kyllini (Ziria) to the east. Psili Korifi ('high peak', 2,355 m) is its top, on a broad, stony summit plateau ringed by subsidiary tops: Neraidorachi (about 2,341 m), Aetorachi, Kokkinovrachos and others. Pine and fir forest covers the slopes up to about 1,800 m; above that there is only grass, scree and bare rock. Among Peloponnesian mountains only Taygetos and Kyllini are higher.

The north side carries the Kalavryta Ski Centre, whose upper lift reaches Neraidorachi beside the Helmos Observatory and its 2.3 m Aristarchos telescope. From the ski centre the summit is a half-day walk of about 10 km and 800 m of ascent there and back, on a faint, poorly maintained path. On the east side the Styx waterfall drops off the cliffs below Neraidorachi into a wild valley above Peristera and Solos, and the mountain is part of the Chelmos–Vouraikos Geopark.

In summer this is a straightforward if rough hill walk, with big views over the Gulf of Corinth and the northern Peloponnese. From December to April the upper mountain is under snow, and cornices and hard ice make it a proper winter climb.

Climbing Notes

In summer and autumn any fit hill walker can do it: allow 4–5 hours for the round trip from the ski centre, carry all your water, and bring a map or GPS track, as waymarks are faded and the summit plateau is confusing in cloud. Off-season, the ski centre lifts have carried walkers up to Neraidorachi, leaving only the ridge walk to the summit; check with the centre on the day.

The refuge at Pouliou Vrysi is closed, so this is a day hike, usually based in Kalavryta. For a longer day, combine the summit with a descent to the Styx waterfall, which involves very steep ground, or traverse the Neraidorachi ridge.

From December to April (sometimes into May) the route is a winter climb. Deep snow collects below Neraidorachi, the ridge carries cornices, and fog is common. Crampons, an ice axe and the skills to use them are essential, and avalanche awareness matters on the slopes beside the pistes.

History

Chelmos is the ancient Aroania. The Styx waterfall on its eastern side was the most famous landmark of the mountain in antiquity, identified with the river of the underworld; the ancient town of Nonacris lay near modern Peristera. Pausanias placed the cave where the mad daughters of Proitos took refuge in the Aroanian mountains, probably the Cave of the Lakes on the western slopes. The name Chelmos (Helmos) is usually derived from a South Slavic word for 'summit'. The Aristarchos telescope of the National Observatory of Athens stands on Neraidorachi near the top of the ski area.
