The usual ascent of Falakro's highest summit: from the ski centre on the Agio Pnevma plateau (about 1,720 m) south to the top of Kartalka above the southern cliffs, east along the ridge to the Chionotrypa chasm and up to Profitis Ilias (2,232 m). About 700 m of ascent with the ups and downs; about 2¼ hours up.

About <1% of this line is approximate (no mapped trail; drawn from the terrain). Check it against a map before relying on it.

Why? 3 check notes
  • ascent 820 m is 1.6× the net gain 498 m: the line probably detours down and back up (not a traverse)
  • DIN time up 4.31 h vs published 2.25 h (+92%)
  • unresolved waypoints: Chionotrypa

Drive up from Drama to the Falakro ski centre on the Agio Pnevma plateau at about 1,720 m and park by the base chalet (Anemosouri). Head south across the open, karstic slopes to Kartalka (about 2,020–2,035 m) in about an hour without particular difficulty; from the top there is a view down the steep southern cliffs of Falakro and into the wild Nakvitsa gorge. Follow the ridge east for about 35 minutes to the Chionotrypa chasm, a striking pothole about 90 m deep on the saddle between the Chionotrypa top (about 2,111 m, where the highest chairlift ends at a café) and Profitis Ilias. The summit is about 40 minutes further up the broad, stony slope. A Hellaspath GPS track of a similar loop from the ski centre measures 6.3 km with about 700 m of ascent. For the descent, return to the chasm and climb over the Chionotrypa top to the lift-top café, then follow the ski pistes down to the ski centre. The plateau and summit ridge are bare, with no shade or reliable water, and exposed to wind and thunderstorms in summer. From December to April the area is a ski resort and the summit becomes a winter ascent; keep off groomed pistes while the lifts are running.

Overview

The highest summit (about 2,230 m) of Falakro, the 'bald mountain' above Drama and the highest in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. From the ski centre on the Agio Pnevma plateau an easy walk over bare karst, past the deep Chionotrypa chasm, reaches the top in a little over two hours.

Falakro (Greek 'bald'; Turkish and Bulgarian Bozdag) is a large limestone massif north of Drama in eastern Greek Macedonia, the highest mountain of the region. Its upper part is a treeless karst plateau of grass, scree and sinkholes, with beech forest lower down; a small spur reaches the Bulgarian border to the north. The southern side drops in a horseshoe of cliffs about 3 km long, from Kartalka past Chionotrypa and Profitis Ilias to Pseftodonti, Vardena and Sitna, cut by gorges such as the Nakvitsa narrows above the village of Pyrgoi.

The Falakro ski centre on the Agio Pnevma plateau (about 1,720 m), with lifts up to a café on the Chionotrypa top at about 2,111 m, makes the summit easy to reach: about 700 m of walking from the car park with only modest difficulty. Just west of the summit the Chionotrypa chasm, a karst shaft about 90 m deep, is the mountain's best-known feature.

More demanding approaches climb from Pyrgoi through the southern gorges (about 6 hours to the summit), and the southern cliffs hold long mixed winter routes and couloirs. In winter the plateau is a ski area and a winter-hiking ground for local mountaineering clubs.

Climbing Notes

From the ski centre the walk is easy for anyone fit for 700 m of ascent: allow 2–2½ hours up and rather less down by the pistes. The plateau is open and featureless, so carry a map or GPS track for cloud, which is common. There is no shade or reliable water above the ski centre; bring 1.5–2 litres and a waterproof, as summer thunderstorms build quickly. Keep well back from the edge of the Chionotrypa chasm and the southern cliffs.

For a full day, climb from Pyrgoi on the marked Φ routes through the southern gorges (Φ3 via the Sitna plateau and Pseftodonti is the hardest); the EOS Prosotsani refuge at Kapi lies on the Φ2 route. In winter (December–April) the summit is a straightforward ski tour or snowshoe ascent in good conditions, but avalanches are possible on steeper slopes and visibility on the plateau can drop to nothing.

History

Falakro has no recorded first ascent; the summit, like many in Greece, is named after the prophet Elijah. In August 2020 local organisers ran a 25 km 'Six Peaks' mountain race (2,500 m of ascent) from Pyrgoi over Kartalka, Chionotrypa, Profitis Ilias and the three Vardena tops to the ski centre.
