The only published line on Arkhyz's highest summit: from the Psysh gorge up a side stream and snowfield to the buttress between two small glaciers, then about 950 m of mostly easy to moderate blocky rock with one 40 m abseil into a couloir below the summit ridge. A long day from a camp at Kyshlausu, usually with a bivouac on the glacier.

From Arkhyz village drive about 20 km up the dirt road along the Psysh to the border post beyond the Belaya river, then follow the good path up the Psysh to the Amanauz delta (ford or log crossing of the Amanauz) and continue on the Naur pass path along the left bank of the Psysh to the Kyshlausu locality, about 4 km from the post. Opposite Kyshlausu leave the path to the right along a stream. Follow scree beside the stream bed to rock outcrops, turn them on the left by grassy ledges and climb small buttresses to the snowfield below the glacier (about 2.5 hours). Cross the snowfield to the buttress between the two glaciers (the east buttress) and reach it by scree. Climb about 100 m of easy blocky rock (belay needed), pass a gendarme on the left onto a gentle glacier (possible bivouac), and regain the crest at the dip behind the gendarme. Continue on easy and moderate rock towards the summit, avoiding harder sections on the right. Pass the large pre-summit gendarme on the left by small ledges; about 50 m further, abseil about 40 m to the left into a small couloir. Beyond it climb a short rib (15 m) up and left, then easy broken rock (200 m) to the summit ridge, and follow it right for 35 m to the top. The first-ascent party took 7.5 hours from the snowfield and 10 hours from Kyshlausu. Descend the same way and bivouac on the glacier: the lower part of the buttress above the glacier is exposed to rockfall in the afternoon. There is room for one tent near the summit.

Route confidence 35%Overview
Pshish (3,790 m) is the highest summit of the Arkhyz area, a snow-capped rock peak on a short northern spur of the Main Caucasus Ridge above the Psysh gorge. Rarely climbed, its only well-described route is a 950 m rock buttress of Russian grade 3A, inside the border zone.
Pshish rises at the head of the Psysh valley south of Arkhyz village, on a short spur running north from the Main Caucasus Ridge between the Amanauz and Psysh valleys. Small glaciers lie on its eastern side, and it is linked by the Pshish-Uzlovoy col (about 3,350 m) to the Main Ridge summits around the Magana and Naur passes. Its name is derived from the Psysh river.
Despite being the highest point of the district, Pshish sees few ascents compared with Sofia or the peaks above the Arkhyz trekking routes. The approach is easy: a dirt road up the Psysh to a border post and a good path to the Kyshlausu meadows below the peak. The climbing is not: the documented route follows the east buttress over about 950 m of blocky rock, gendarmes and a 40 m abseil, rated 3A by the party who first climbed it in 2002.
The whole upper Psysh gorge lies in the Russian border zone, and a pass is needed beyond the border post.
Climbing Notes
Suitable for parties able to climb Russian 3A rock (about AD-) efficiently and to abseil. Plan two to three days: drive or walk up the Psysh road to the border post, walk about 4 km to camp at Kyshlausu, then a long summit day (the first-ascent party took 10 hours to the top) with a bivouac on the glacier on the way down, since the lower buttress is exposed to rockfall in the afternoon. Carry crampons and ice axe for the snowfield and glacier.
Information is very thin: the 2002 report is the only route description found. Ask in Arkhyz (rescue service or local guides) about current conditions, and get the border-zone pass well before the trip.
History
No record of the first ascent of the summit was found. A party led by Andrey Bychkov made the first ascent of the east buttress on 11 August 2002 and proposed grade 3A.

- Border-zone pass (FSB Border Directorate for Karachay-Cherkessia)Required
The Psysh and Amanauz valleys of Arkhyz are in the Russian border zone; there is a border post on the Psysh road. Apply for an individual border-zone pass through Gosuslugi or the FSB Border Directorate in Cherkessk well in advance and carry it with your passport. Climbers report that the pass covers the 5 km border strip but not the passes of the Main Caucasus Ridge.
