Sources differ: 2Б (Russian classification, rock, 'from the north-west'; route 2.2.48) (Russian route classifier (fasl.ru))

The classified 2Б rock route (Russian grade, roughly PD+) from the north-west, approached from Teberda along the Dzhamagat valley and up the Goralykol valley past shepherds' huts to its upper cirque. The classifier gives only the grade and aspect; the line beyond the cirque is our inference.

Garalykolbashi is a rocky junction summit where the Nazalykol, Goralykol and Daut valleys meet, on the Eastern watershed ridge of the Teberda basin in Teberda National Park. Steep rock walls face the Garalykol pass to the south and a north face drops into the Goralykol valley. From Teberda follow the Dzhamagat valley road to the narzan springs (10–12 km). Turn south-east into the Goralykol valley: from the shepherds' hut by the second narzan spring climb to a forest track above the right bank, which later returns towards the river; beyond, scree alternates with patches of forest, and groups of shepherds' huts appear at roughly hourly intervals. Bronner's guidebook gives 3–3.5 hours from the Dzhamagat narzan to the fourth hut, where the path to the Dzhalkaush pass branches east. Continue up the valley towards the cirque at the head of the Goralykol, below the peak's north face. The Russian classifier lists a single 2Б rock route 'from the north-west' (route 2.2.48) with no leader or year. The north-west side of the summit faces the Nazaly-Garaly pass (3,385 m) between the Nazalykol and Goralykol heads, so the likely line gains that saddle or the ridge above it and follows the north-west ridge to the top. Descend the same way.

Overview

A rocky junction peak of 3,768 m above the Nazalykol, Goralykol and Daut valleys in Teberda National Park, whose name means 'summit above the narzan gorge'. Steep walls on all sides; the easiest classified route is a Russian 2Б rock climb from the north-west.

Garalykolbashi (also Goralykol-bashi) is a knot of rock on the Eastern watershed ridge of the Teberda basin in Karachay-Cherkessia, where the ridge dividing the Teberda from the Daut meets a spur between the Nazalykol and Goralykol valleys. Both of these streams rise on its slopes. From here the watershed runs north to Kyshkadzher, its highest point.

The name is translated as 'summit above the narzan gorge', after the mineral springs at the mouth of the Goralykol valley. Published heights range from 3,768 m (OSM, skeleton) to 3,800 m (route classifier) and 3,816–3,819 m (older guidebooks).

It is a handsome peak from the Nazalykol lakes and the Goralykol valley, with steep rock walls facing the Garalykol pass and a north face above the Goralykol. It is rarely climbed and is known mainly to trekkers crossing the surrounding passes.

Climbing Notes

This is a mountaineering objective for parties comfortable on moderate, loose Caucasian rock (Russian 2Б, roughly PD+), with rope work on exposed sections. Allow two days from Teberda: walk up the Dzhamagat and Goralykol valleys to a camp in the upper Goralykol, then climb the north-west side.

Teberda National Park in 2026 allows visitors only on approved one-day trails and prohibits overnight stays elsewhere, so written permission from the park is needed before camping or climbing. Local guides in Teberda and Dombay can advise on current access.

History

The Russian route classifier lists one route, 2Б rock from the north-west, without a first-ascent party or date. V. M. Bronner's Soviet-era Teberda guidebook describes the approach valleys and gives the height as 3,819 m.
