Sources differ: Dificultad alta (Junta de Andalucía, for the full 14.8 km waymarked trail from the A-324) (Junta de Andalucía, Ventana del Visitante)

The standard ascent of the highest point of Jaén province: a dirt track from the Huelma–Cambil road to the Cañada de las Cruces (about 1,600 m), then a signposted, cairned path past the Collado del Puerto (1,787 m) and a traversing climb across karst to the summit ridge. About 600 m of ascent; a 9–12 km loop with the Miramundos refuge.

Turn off the A-324 between Huelma and Cambil onto a dirt track that is normally passable in an ordinary car and drive about 5 km to the Cañada de las Cruces (about 1,600 m), where most parties park. (The track can be followed further, to its end just below the Collado del Puerto; the Junta de Andalucía's waymarked trail starts lower down at a farmhouse and is 14.8 km one way.) Continue on foot along the wide track, which loops around the valley for about 2 km before becoming a path that reaches the Collado del Puerto (1,787 m), a crossroads of paths with signposts. About 50 m above the col a signposted fork splits: right for Miramundos, left for Mágina. The Mágina path climbs north-west across the whole slope in zigzags with a few short dips, through karst, well marked with posts and cairns. It reaches a small hollow and col with an old snow pit (pozo de nieve) just west of the summit; from there the summit with its trig pillar is a few minutes east (Peña de Jaén, 2,147 m, is about 1 km west along a faint ridge path). Allow about 1 hour from the Collado del Puerto to the summit, roughly 2–2½ hours from the Cañada de las Cruces. Return the same way, or make a loop east along the main ridge over two or three tops of almost the same height and down to a col from which a signposted path returns south to the Collado del Puerto; 400 m further east along the ridge is the small Miramundos refuge (2,077 m). Between Mágina and Miramundos the path is often lost and fog is common, so this section needs care in poor visibility. The loop from the Cañada de las Cruces is 9–12 km with 600–700 m of ascent, typically 4½–6 hours including stops.

Overview

The highest point of Jaén province (2,165 m), a limestone summit on a 5 km ridge above 2,000 m in the Sierra Mágina Natural Park. A waymarked half-day walk of about 600 m from the Cañada de las Cruces, with views to the north face of Sierra Nevada.

Pico Mágina is the culminating point of the Sierra Mágina, an isolated block of the Subbetic ranges rising more than 1,100 m above the olive groves between Jaén, Úbeda and Huelma. Its summit sits on a long ridge that stays above 2,000 m for about 5 km, with Peña de Jaén (2,147 m) to the west and Miramundos (2,077 m) to the east. The upper slopes are bare karst with cushion shrubs, and the massif is a refuge for endemic plants such as Glandora nitida and Viola cazorlensis; the whole area is protected as a natural park and Natura 2000 site.

The normal route is short and straightforward in good weather: a dirt road brings cars to about 1,600 m, and a signposted path marked with posts and cairns climbs past the Collado del Puerto to the summit ridge. On a clear day the view runs south to Sierra Nevada, where the north faces of Mulhacén and Alcazaba are visible, and north to the Sierra de Cazorla. Most walkers make a loop along the ridge to the small Miramundos refuge.

The mountain is busiest in winter and spring, when the Andalusian lowlands are pleasant and the summit may carry snow. In summer the walk is hot and waterless, and in poor visibility the karst ridge east of the summit is easy to get lost on.

Climbing Notes

A fit walker needs no special skills in dry conditions: the normal route from the Cañada de las Cruces is about 600–700 m of ascent and 4½–6 hours for the loop with stops. Carry all your water, as there is none on the route. Navigation is the main issue: the path is well marked to the summit but often lost between Mágina and Miramundos, and fog is common, so carry a GPS track or map and compass.

After winter snowfall the upper slopes can be icy; bring crampons or microspikes and an ice axe and know how to use them. The dirt road to the Cañada de las Cruces is usually passable in a normal car, but check conditions after heavy rain or snow. Hunting takes place in the natural park; the regional authority advises checking for hunting activity before you go.
