RegulationReported 23 May 2024
Border-guard closures in the Ivano-Frankivsk Carpathians, in force since May 2024 and still reported in October 2025, cover Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi, Mala Hoverla, Turkul, Pozhyzhevska, Menchul and other south-eastern Chornohora sites. Petros is not on the list; a walker reported in August 2025 that border guards allowed the ascent after checking documents.

1Sources differ: moderate (посередньо), 16.97 km, 1,095 m, 9 h 20 return from Kozmeshchyk (karpaty.guide) · amateur (любитель) (vpohid.com.ua) · winter: Ukrainian sports category 2A (Karpatium)
The shortest and most popular way up: from the Kozmeshchyk tract above Lazeshchyna (reachable by car on a rough road) a forest road and blue-marked path lead past polonyna Holovcheska to the 1,550 m saddle between Petros and Hoverla, then a steep, stony 500 m climb to the summit. About 17 km and 1,100 m return; 3–4 hours up.

From the village of Lazeshchyna on the upper Tysa, a rough dirt road runs about 8 km up the valley to the Kozmeshchyk tract, with a shelter, campsite and hotel ('Sertse Karpat'). Cars can usually get through with care (a 200 UAH barrier fee was reported in 2025), and local 4×4 taxis go further; on foot the road adds about 3 hours each way. The yellow trail continues towards Hoverla; for Petros take the blue marks. The blue route is mostly a stony forest road climbing gently through spruce forest in the Loshchyna and Hreblia tracts and passing below polonyna Holovcheska to the saddle of about 1,550 m on the ridge linking Petros and Hoverla. Marking is sparse; use a navigation app. From the saddle the last 2 km climb about 500 m steeply over rocks and boulder fields to the summit, passing a small cave below the top. Walkers report 3 to 4¼ hours from Kozmeshchyk to the summit. Descend the same way, or follow the red Chornohora ridge trail east to Hoverla and descend the yellow trail to Kozmeshchyk (a fit walker took about 10 hours for this loop in 2025). The steep summit slope is popular in winter but potentially dangerous in snow; the open top has no shelter from wind and lightning.

Route confidence 70%Overview
A 2,020 m steep, stony pyramid at the west end of the Chornohora ridge, opposite Hoverla. Usually climbed from Kozmeshchyk above Lazeshchyna: a long forest road to a saddle, then a steep 500 m rocky climb; 17 km and 1,100 m return.
Petros (Chornohora Petros, to distinguish it from Petros Marmaroskyi) rises at the north-western end of the Chornohora ridge in Zakarpattia, separated from Hoverla, Ukraine's highest point, by a saddle of about 1,550 m. It is a steep-sided, rocky cone with boulder fields and ledges on its upper slopes, and its summit view runs from Hoverla along Chornohora to Pip Ivan and, in clear weather, into Romania. It is quieter than Hoverla.
The usual approach is from the Tysa valley at Lazeshchyna: drive or take a 4×4 taxi up the rough road to the Kozmeshchyk tract, then follow the blue trail past polonyna Holovcheska to the saddle and up the steep final slope. Longer routes come from Kvasy (about 32 km return, often over two days) and from Yasinia. Strong walkers combine Petros and Hoverla along the red ridge trail.
The name may come from Romanian 'petros', stony. Local legend tells of the orphan twins Marichka and Petryk who defeated a monster from two neighbouring peaks, which became Blyznytsia and Petros. In June rhododendrons, a Red Book species, flower on the upper slopes.
Climbing Notes
A full but technically easy day: 3–4 hours up from Kozmeshchyk and 6–9 hours return, with a steep, rocky but non-technical final 500 m. Start early, carry water and sun protection, and use a GPS track because the blue marks are sparse. In winter the steep upper slope is potentially dangerous; it is graded as a Ukrainian category 2A snow ascent and needs crampons, an ice axe and experience.
Ukraine is under martial law. Carry a passport or ID; men aged 18–60 must carry military registration documents. Border guards patrol Chornohora: a walker in August 2025 was asked for documents but told the Petros ascent was allowed without a permit. Sites further south-east on the ridge (including Mala Hoverla, Turkul and Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi) have been closed to tourists since 2024. Foreign visitors should check their government's travel advice.

Karpaty.rocks (June 2024) reported that border guards expected advance notification by email for Chornohora outside the 5 km strip (for approaches from Yasinia or Lazeshchyna: 27th Mukachevo detachment, mukachevo_zagin@dpsu.gov.ua, at least 24 hours ahead). A walker in August 2025 was told by border guards that no permit was needed for Petros. Check the current rules.
