The classic walk on Thessaloniki's mountain: from Chortiatis village (about 560 m) the old Icemakers' Trail climbs the shady north side through kermes oak and beech past ruined ice pits to the SEO refuge at about 1,000 m, then a short path leads towards the summit, Kissos (1,201 m), which lies inside a fenced Air Force radar station. About 500–600 m of ascent.
This route ends at Closed-area boundary, about 60 m from the summit, which is not accessible. Distance, ascent and times are to that point.

The path starts at the upper edge of Chortiatis on the uphill side of the road to the antenna park. The first section is cut into steep rock among head-high kermes oaks, with Thessaloniki and the Thermaic Gulf behind you; it passes the Afanos clearing (where an effigy of Judas is burnt on Good Friday) and the shallow Arkoudotrypa cave, then climbs through oak scrub into beech forest. From the old walnut flat remnants of a cobbled path built in 1915 by Indian soldiers of the Allied army to reach an observation post on the summit lead on; beside it are stone water chambers that once supplied Thessaloniki. At about 900 m in deep beech forest the trail reaches the ice-making sites: collapsed ice stores (magazia) and flat earthen freezing floors (bares) around Pente Aderfia and Kria Vrysi, whose spring has dried up. The last ice-maker retired in 1956. At Megali Petra (about 970 m) there is a view of Lake Koroneia; the trail then joins the dirt road from the antenna park and runs through chestnut forest to the SEO 'Nikos Papadopoulos' refuge at Tzek Baktse (about 1,000 m). From the refuge a path climbs south-west through the forest, past the Scouts' spring at the foot of the summit cone, towards the top in 20–30 minutes. The summit, Kissos, is occupied by an Air Force radar station: you can go only as far as the fence, or to the open saddle and top of Vazoura (1,060 m) east of it, with views over Chalkidiki and the Thermaic Gulf. Return the same way, or by the road and the antenna park.

Route confidence 65%Overview
Thessaloniki's own mountain (1,201 m), a beech- and chestnut-wooded ridge rising just east of the city. The old Icemakers' Trail climbs from Chortiatis village to a club refuge in about an hour and a half; the summit itself, ancient Kissos, is a fenced Air Force radar station.
Chortiatis, called Kissos in antiquity (the summit still officially carries that name), closes the eastern horizon of Thessaloniki above the village of Chortiatis (about 560 m) and the town of Thermi, with Lake Koroneia and the Chalkidiki hills beyond. Kermes oak covers the lower slopes, giving way to beech and chestnut forest on the north side; the second top, Kolosourtis, carries the antenna park, and a radar dome of the Air Force sits on the main summit.
The classic walk is the Icemakers' Trail from Chortiatis village to the SEO 'Nikos Papadopoulos' refuge at Tzek Baktse (about 1,000 m). Until 1956 villagers froze stream water on earthen floors on winter nights, stored the ice in insulated pits in the shady beech forest and carried it down by mule to sell in Thessaloniki in summer; the ruined pits line the path. From the refuge it is 20–30 minutes towards the summit, though you can go only as far as the radar fence or the neighbouring top of Vazoura.
The mountain can be approached from every side, from Sedes, Thermi or Asvestochori as well as Chortiatis, and is the first place around Thessaloniki to get snow in winter.
Climbing Notes
An easy half-day walk: allow about 1½ hours from the village to the refuge and another 20–30 minutes to the radar fence, plus the return. Wear proper shoes; the first section is rocky. Carry water, since the old springs on the trail have partly dried up. The refuge is normally open from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon (22 beds, food served), other nights by arrangement. Respect the military area at the summit. In winter after snowfall take microspikes.
History
In 1915 Indian soldiers of the Allied army built a cobbled path to an observation post on the summit, which used balloons; remnants survive on the Icemakers' Trail. The SEO refuge, a two-storey stone house, was built in 1968. The Byzantine name Chortiatis comes from a monastery at the foot of the mountain.
