Start behind Lugano-Paradiso railway station (282 m) or at the funicular valley station nearby. A signed path climbs through woods to Morchino, then follows steps beside the funicular track to the Pazzallo intermediate station (448 m), about 50 minutes. Pazzallo can also be reached by funicular or car; parking at the halfway station is reserved for staff, so use the Paradiso municipal car park or the funicular's own car park. From Pazzallo a well-signed woodland path zigzags up the north-west side, with many steps, roots and a few rocky sections, to the summit area in about 1 hour 10 minutes. The top has a small church with a roof terrace and viewing table, a restaurant, a museum and picnic areas. Descend the same way (about 1 hour to Pazzallo, 1½ hours to Paradiso), take the funicular, or follow the rocky path south to Ciona and Carona (about 1 hour), from where PostBuses return to Lugano; longer descents continue to Melide, Figino or Morcote (up to 2¾ hours).

Route confidence 85%Overview
Lugano's 912 m house mountain, rising 640 m straight from the lake at Paradiso. A funicular since 1890, a two-hour woodland path and a strenuous via ferrata lead to a summit church with a 360° view over Lake Lugano.
Monte San Salvatore is the steep, wooded cone that closes the Gulf of Lugano to the south, between Paradiso and the Melide causeway. Despite its modest height it has a prominence of over 600 m, and from the summit you look straight down on Lugano, the lake's arms and the causeway, with the Alps on the northern horizon. The top carries a small church with a roof terrace, a restaurant, a small museum and picnic areas.
Most visitors ride the funicular from Paradiso, changing cars at Pazzallo. Walkers can climb the 640 m from the lakeside in about two hours on a steep but straightforward path, then descend south through Ciona and Carona, perhaps on to Morcote or Melide, and return by bus, boat or train. Climbers use the Via ferrata Delio Ossola on the north-west face, one of the more strenuous ferratas in Ticino.
The mountain is low enough to be walked in almost any season; summer can be hot and humid, and the best conditions are usually in spring and autumn.
Climbing Notes
The hike needs only normal fitness and good shoes; the path is steep, stepped and rooty, and slippery after rain. Combine the ascent with the funicular in one direction, or make a traverse down to Carona and Morcote and return by PostBus or boat.
The via ferrata is graded K4-5 (difficult to very difficult) and is physically demanding, with long steep and overhanging sections on a single thick cable and few steps. Bring a full via ferrata set and helmet (the funicular company does not hire equipment; it refers to a sports shop in Lugano), avoid it when wet or with thunderstorms around, and go on a weekday to avoid queues. Guide Alpine Ticino offers guided ascents.
History
The Monte San Salvatore funicular opened on 27 March 1890. It runs in two sections of 815 m each, changing at Pazzallo, and was rebuilt in 1926, re-equipped with new cars in 1957 and modernised in 2001. The via ferrata on the north-west face was built in September 2002 in memory of the Lugano mountain guide Delio Ossola, who died on the Matterhorn.
