The shortest climb from the Weißensee: from the lido car park on the east shore (944 m), a signed path climbs steeply through forest to the Stosia saddle above the Techendorfer Alm, then easy pasture paths curve below the Almspitz or along the ridge to the broad grassy summit. About 1,300 m of ascent, out and back.

Start at the large car park by the lido (Strandbad) on the east shore of the Weißensee (about 944 m). Follow the road briefly, pass the campsite, then take the signed trail (numbered 9, steep variant, by alpenvereinaktiv and 265 by Bergwelten) straight up through the forest, crossing the forest road several times. Waymarks are red-white-red; watch them carefully in the forest. Passing the Techendorfer Alm on the right, the path comes out at the Stosia (Stoisia Alm, Stoisa saddle). From the Stosia, gentle alpine paths (trail 264) curve north-west to the summit, either below the Almspitz (2,180 m) or along the ridge over it. The Latschur is a large, rounded grass mountain with a steep north face; the top looks north across the Drau valley to the Kreuzeck group and Hohe Tauern and south over the Weißensee to the Carnic Alps and Julian Alps. Return the same way, or descend via the Techendorfer Alm, a staffed alp with food, which is also the only reliable water on the route. Old snowfields can remain near the summit into May and June. Longer approaches come from Neusach at the western end of the lake (via Zihagas and Peloschen, about 5 hours to the summit) and from the Seetal car park on the Goldeck panorama road, which has the least height gain (about 1,100 m) but is long.

Overview

The highest summit (2,236 m) of the Latschur group in the Gailtal Alps, a broad grassy ridge between the Weißensee and the Drau valley. A long but technically easy climb of about 1,300 m from the lake, with a steep north face on the far side and wide views to the Hohe Tauern and Julian Alps.

The Latschur rises directly north of the Weißensee in Carinthia, the high point of the Latschur group, which runs from the lake east to the Drau bend at Sachsenburg and the Goldeck above Spittal. Unlike the limestone ranges to the south, the group is built of crystalline rock, the geological continuation of the Kreuzeck group across the Drau, so its southern side is a sweep of forest and alpine pasture while the northern side drops in steep, broken faces.

On the lake side it is a large, rounded grass mountain, fairly easy to climb and busy on summer weekends. Routes start on the Weißensee shore, at Neusach or high on the Goldeck panorama road, and link easily with the neighbouring Eckwand (2,221 m) and Staff (2,217 m) for longer ridge days. The summit view takes in the Weißensee directly below, the Carnic and Julian Alps to the south and the Kreuzeck, Reißeck and Hohe Tauern to the north.

The surrounding forests are quiet; griffon vultures are seen in summer and brown bears have been reported in the area.

Climbing Notes

From the Weißensee east shore expect about 1,300 m of ascent on a steep forest path followed by easy pasture, graded about T2; the effort, not the terrain, is the challenge. The loop over the Eckwand adds height and takes about 7 hours in all. From the Seetal car park on the Goldeck road (toll road) the height gain is about 1,100 m but the route is long and partly boggy and faintly marked near the Siflitzer Kuhalm.

The southern routes are sunny and hot in summer: start early and carry enough water, as there is little on the way apart from the Techendorfer Alm. Watch the red-white-red waymarks in the forest. Old snow can remain near the summit into May and June. In winter the Latschur is a popular ski tour, with the usual avalanche precautions on the open upper slopes.
