The easiest way up the highest summit of the Bavarian Ammergau Alps: from the car park at the German–Austrian border near Ammerwald (1,080 m), through forest and up the stony Hochgrießkar to the Schwarzenköpfel (1,897 m), then a steep, rocky climb with easy use of hands to the summit cross. About 1,100 m, 3 hours up, 2 hours down.

Start at the walkers' car park 'bei den Sieben Quellen' (Parkplatz Ammerwald) on the state road from Ettal and Linderhof, right at the German–Austrian border about 7 km beyond Schloss Linderhof and below the hairpin bends. Follow the Kreuzspitze signs into the woods, cross a dry riverbed and turn left into the forest. After a gentle start and a flat stretch the path climbs in many moderate zigzags. In the Hochgrießkar the trail becomes stonier and steeper and leads to the Schwarzenköpfel, a viewpoint at 1,897 m among dwarf pines. After a short descent the steep final section begins: switchbacks through broken, increasingly rocky ground where you use your hands several times, though it never becomes truly difficult. Red waymarks guide you; the upper ridge section is reported as poorly marked in places, and erosion makes the stretch from the cirque to the ridge slippery. Just below the top the path from the Kuchelberg ridge joins from the right; a few easy minutes lead to the summit. Descend the same way. There are no huts, springs or refreshments on the route. Avoid it in rain or on wet rock, and in snow or ice the north-facing upper section becomes serious. The alternative from the east over the Kuchelberg ridge (from the Kuchelbachtal car park near Graswang, about 1,280 m of ascent) meets the normal route just below the summit; its final section to the junction is harder (around T4-) and partly protected by a steel cable or chains.

Overview

The highest summit of the Bavarian Ammergau Alps (2,185 m), a limestone pyramid above the Graswang valley and Schloss Linderhof, with no hut or lift. A demanding but non-technical 1,100 m mountain walk from the Austrian border, ending in steep, broken rock.

The Kreuzspitze rises in the heart of the Ammergau Alps, in the Ettal state forest south of the Graswang valley and south-east of the Ammersattel, a short distance north of the Austrian border; the Kreuzspitzl (2,089 m), 900 m to the south, lies on the border itself. Its summit is platy limestone over Hauptdolomit. Before the Zugspitze became Bavarian in 1802 it was the highest mountain in Bavaria, and it remains the highest point of the Bavarian part of the range.

Because there is no hut and no cable car, it is quieter than Munich's classic Hausberge, though the normal route can be busy on fine weekends. The usual ascent from the car park at the border near Ammerwald climbs about 1,100 m through forest and the stony Hochgrießkar to the Schwarzenköpfel, then up steep, rocky ground needing sure feet and a head for heights.

The longer eastern approach from the Kuchelbachtal or over the Kuchelberg ridge (about 1,280–1,450 m) is quieter and makes a good traverse with the normal route if you can arrange transport between the two car parks. In winter the Hochgrießkar is a demanding ski tour.

Climbing Notes

Good fitness for 1,100 m of ascent and descent in 5 hours of walking, sure-footedness and a head for heights are needed; the final 300 m are steep, stony and in places require hands. Carry all your water, as there are no springs or huts. Do not go in rain or on wet rock, and avoid the north-side upper section when snow or ice lies (often into late May and from the first autumn snow). Start early on summer weekends, as the car park at the border fills and the summit gets crowded. Experienced walkers can combine the normal route with the Kuchelberg ridge (T3–T4-, partly cabled) for a traverse.

History

Zeno Diemer and four companions made the first recorded tourist ascent on 26 August 1885.
