The classic ascent of Vigla (about 1,440 m), the summit of Mount Kerkis on Samos, from the coast at Votsalakia. Olive-grove tracks and a waymarked path through pine forest lead to Evangelistria monastery, then a steep, exposed scree slope to the Profitis Ilias chapel and a rocky final climb. About 1,450 m of ascent.

Start at Votsalakia on the coast at Kampos Marathokampou. Walk west along the beach road, cross the bridge and turn right on the road signed to Evangelistria, then left at a T-junction onto a rough track through olive groves. Bear right at the main fork (red arrow); about 100 m further, just before a blue-capped shrine, a narrow gap on the left leads onto the rocky path, marked with red paint and plastic discs. With a 4WD vehicle you can drive about 4 km to a trailhead at roughly 450 m, saving about an hour each way. The path climbs through pine forest to the grounds of the Evangelistria monastery (about 2 hours from the coast), the last reliable water. Take the path to the right of the monastery; above the trees it becomes rocky and crosses a steep scree slope with red and occasional blue marks to the chapel of Profitis Ilias (about 1,160 m, about 1 hour from the monastery). Water is reported a little east of the chapel. From the chapel take the faint path on its right, keep right to avoid the deep valley, skirt the false summit and climb the rocky slope to Vigla (about 50 minutes). Descend the same way. The route is fully exposed above the monastery; start at dawn in summer. Allow 3.5–4.5 hours up from the coast and 2.5–3 hours down.

Overview

Mount Kerkis is the pale marble massif filling the west of Samos, the second-highest mountain of the East Aegean islands. Its summit, Vigla (about 1,440 m), is reached by a hard, sun-exposed climb of some 1,450 m from the beach at Votsalakia, past an old monastery and a chapel perched above the scree.

Kerkis (ancient Kerketeus) rises steeply from the sea in western Samos, between Marathokampos to the south and Kallithea and Drakei to the west and north. It is built of marble, which gives its bare cliffs a whitish look, and it is a Natura 2000 site sheltering a number of rare plants and animals. Among the East Aegean islands only Fengari on Samothrace is higher.

The lower slopes carry pine forest and olive groves; above about 800 m the mountain is open rock and scree with little shade. Several small monasteries and chapels sit on its flanks, among them Evangelistria on the southern route and the chapel of Profitis Ilias below the summit, and the Cave of Pythagoras lies on the eastern side. From Vigla the view takes in the Fourni islands, Ikaria and the Turkish coast.

The ascent is unusual in starting practically at sea level: the full route from Votsalakia gains about 1,450 m and is a serious day in the heat. The Samos Hikes waymarked network offers several lines to the top, from Votsalakia, Panagia Makrini on the west and Kakoperato on the north-east.

Climbing Notes

A long, demanding hike rather than a technical climb: about 1,450 m of ascent from the coast, 3.5–4.5 hours up and 2.5–3 hours down, on rocky paths and a steep scree slope. Driving the rough track to about 450 m (4WD) shortens the day by roughly two hours. Heat is the main hazard: start at first light, choose a day with a cool northerly breeze, and carry at least 3 litres of water, refilling at the Evangelistria monastery. Markings are red paint and discs; the path beyond Profitis Ilias is faint, so carry a GPS track or the 1:25,000 map. Snakes and scorpions are present.

History

The ancient name Kerketeus has been linked with Circe. According to tradition, Pythagoras hid in the cave on the eastern side of the mountain from the tyrant Polycrates before leaving for Italy. The Evangelistria monastery on the southern route is reported to date from the 11th century.
