The summit of Parnitha, Karavola (1,413 m), lies inside a fenced military radar station and cannot be visited. The standard outing instead circles it: from the Bafi refuge (1,161 m) past Skipiza spring and a fire lookout, then across the fir-clad north slope below the summit on the O22 path to Mola spring and back to Bafi. An easy 2½–3 hour loop.

This route ends at O22 / Mpafi - Mola, about 1.2 km from the summit, which is not accessible. Distance, ascent and times are to that point.

Drive or walk up the paved road to the Bafi refuge of EOS Athens (1,161 m). About 200 m before the refuge turn left onto the road towards Skipiza and the radar station; after roughly 750 m, at the first big bend, a sign marks the start of the path (yellow square waymarks). It winds between rocks and through forest burnt in 2007, climbs gently and then drops to Skipiza spring (about 1,196 m), the highest spring on the mountain, restored by the National Park. At a fork about 20 minutes from the road keep right towards the fire lookout; ten minutes later signs point left to the lookout (a short, fairly steep detour; built by the volunteer group E.DA.SA. in 1989–90, with views over the Saronic and South Euboean Gulfs to Dirfys) and right to Mola. The path then traverses the big northern slope below Karavola through old Greek fir forest and clearings (O22 waymarks with a purple square), past the old place names Maderes, Templos and Milkiniza. The fenced summit, with its radar and communication masts, stays above you on the right. At the junction for Lykoporia and Mola follow the Mola stream down (red square) to Mola spring opposite the chapel of Agios Petros, then climb gently back (red marks) past the small Vrysi tis Charas spring, below the Samari ridge, cross the ring road and Lakka Bafi to the refuge. Topoguide gives about 3 hours; Fysiolatres 2½–3 hours. The loop can be extended round Ornio (1,350 m), the second-highest top.

Overview

Karavola (1,413 m) is the highest summit of Mount Parnitha and of Attica, 30 km north of central Athens. The top is a fenced military radar station, so walkers circle it on an easy fir-forest loop from the Bafi refuge instead.

Parnitha is the largest and highest mountain of Attica, a limestone massif of about 250 km² north of Athens, much of it a national park since 1961. Its highest point, Karavola (also spelt Karambola), rises above the Bafi and Flambouri refuges, the Mont Parnes casino and Athens's main broadcast transmitters; other tops include Ornio (1,350 m), Area, Avgo and Xerovouni. Aleppo pine covers the slopes below about 1,000 m and Greek fir the upper mountain, home to red deer; large fires in 2007, 2021 and 2023 burnt much of the forest.

The summit itself is occupied by a military installation with radar and communication masts and is closed to the public. The popular 'Karavola loop' from the Bafi refuge passes Skipiza spring, a fire lookout with views over the Saronic and South Euboean Gulfs, and the O22 path through the old fir forest below the fence, returning by Mola spring: about 3 hours on good paths with little height gain.

Parnitha is a cool escape from Athens in summer and regularly gets snow in winter, when the Bafi refuge is a popular day-trip destination.

Climbing Notes

Easy walking suitable for beginners and older children; allow 2½–3 hours for the loop. Follow the yellow, purple (O22) and red square waymarks and the signposts. Do not try to enter or photograph the military area. In summer the burnt lower slopes are hot and there is high fire risk; parts of the national park can be closed on days of extreme fire danger. In winter carry warm clothing and microspikes; the road up may be closed after heavy snow.

History

In antiquity Parnitha (Parnes) formed Athens's northern defensive frontier, with forts such as Phyle and the fort of Limiko just north of the summit. The Bafi refuge was built by EOS Athens in 1937–39.
