The standard ascent from the Sudelfeld side: from the hikers' car park below the Berggasthof Rosengasse (1,075 m) past the Rosengassen Alm, over a small rock step with two iron rungs to the Traithenkessel saddle, round the Jägerwand to the Fellalm-Sattel and up through dwarf pine to the summit cross. About 780–900 m of ascent and 2–3 hours up.

From the hikers' car park just below the Berggasthof Rosengasse (1,075 m, south of the Sudelfeld road) follow the signs for 'Brünnsteinhaus, Großer Traithen' past a chapel, the Kranzlerhütte and the Rosengassen Alm, then a meadow path south into a basin and up grassy slopes and forest. Beyond the forest a small rock step is eased by two iron footholds, the only aid on the route, and the path becomes rockier up to the Traithenkessel saddle (about 1,500 m), about 1 hour 10 minutes from the start. From the Traithenkessel traverse west below the Jägerwand to a small saddle where the path from the Oberes Sudelfeld joins, and continue to the Fellalm-Sattel (1,645 m) between the Kleiner and Großer Traithen; the Kleiner Traithen (1,722 m) is a 15-minute detour north. The final 200 m climb into the east flank and up through dwarf pine on rocky steps and smooth gullies that are very slippery when wet, reaching the cross about 40 minutes from the saddle. The summit view runs from the Hohe Tauern to the Zillertal Alps, the Kaisergebirge, the Wendelstein and the Chiemsee. Return the same way, or continue east along the ridge over the Unterberger Joch to the Steilner Joch (1,747 m, about 40 minutes) and descend steeply north, with two short cable-protected steps, back to the Traithenkessel and Rosengasse (loop 9.2 km, about 5¼ hours). From the Oberes Sudelfeld car parks behind the Speck- and Walleralm (about 1,410 m) the ascent is only about 440 m and 1¼–1½ hours.

Overview

A 1,852 m dwarf-pine summit above the Sudelfeld, among the highest of the Mangfall Mountains and the highest point of the Rosenheim district. A short but steep and often muddy mountain walk with an open view from the Hohe Tauern to the Kaisergebirge.

The Großer Traithen rises between the Sudelfeld ski area, the Ursprung valley above Bayrischzell and the Inn valley near Oberaudorf and Kufstein. Its west side drops steeply about 1,000 m into the Ursprungtal; to the north a ridge links it over the Fellalm-Sattel to the Kleiner Traithen (1,722 m), and to the east a dwarf-pine ridge runs over the Unterberger Joch and Steilner Joch towards the Brünnstein. The boundary between the Rosenheim and Miesbach districts crosses the summit.

It is a popular half-day walk from the Sudelfeld road, combining well with the Kleiner Traithen or a loop over the Steilner Joch. Nothing blocks the view south to the main Alpine chain, and the Wendelstein, Kaisergebirge, Chiemsee and Watzmann are all in sight. The paths are short but rough: steep rocky steps and gullies through dwarf pine that become slippery and muddy after rain.

Climbing Notes

A fit walker needs 2–3 hours from Rosengasse (about 800–900 m of ascent) or 1¼–1½ hours from the Oberes Sudelfeld (about 440 m). Sure-footedness matters more than fitness: the upper section through the dwarf pine is steep and polished, and very slippery when wet, and the descent from the Steilner Joch has two short cable-protected steps. Carry enough water, as there are no springs and the dwarf pine traps heat. After long rain wait a few dry days. In winter the Traithen is a ski-touring objective; check the avalanche bulletin and respect the Wald-Wild-Schongebiet (forest and wildlife protection area) at the Unterberger Joch.
