Sources differ: DNT 'krevende' (red) hike (ut.no) · YDS class 1 (winter, from Randabygda) (westcoastpeaks.com)

The usual summer approach to the highest point of Stad municipality: from the summer farm Randastøylen above Randabygda, follow paths along the rivers into Fagredalen, then pathless slopes and marker cairns up the south-east ridge to the summit overlooking Hornindalsvatnet. About 8.6 km return with roughly 800 m of ascent, about 4 hours.

From Lote on Nordfjord take Panoramavegen towards Randabygda, turn off at the sign for the sports ground (Ålandsleite) and take the first right towards a white farmhouse; about 2.5 km of gravel toll road leads almost to Randastøylen, with a fenced parking area just below the farm (toll and parking fee, bring cash). Livestock graze here in summer. The simplest line follows the path uphill along the river, passes a large boulder with a small cairn, crosses the next river and follows it on the far side. For Glitregga, follow the river up Fagredalen on a trail; above that there is no clear path until marker cairns appear near the top. Westcoastpeaks describes the winter line from Randastøylen north-east to Holmøyskaret (the pass between Glitregga and Bléegga), up the first valley on the left on a cairned trail, then north onto the south-east ridge and along it to the summit. The summit is not visible until you are quite close. Descend the same way. In cloud the plateau-like upper slopes are confusing and there are cliffs above Holmøyskaret, so take a GPS track. ut.no gives 8.6 km return, 784 m of ascent and about 4 hours; other sources give 3.5–4 hours.

Overview

A broad 1,297 m mountain on the Stad–Stryn border between Nordfjord and Hornindalsvatnet, the highest point of Stad municipality. Its gentle south-west-facing slopes make an easy-angled hike or spring ski tour with a view down into Hornindalsvatnet, Europe's deepest lake.

Glitregga (also written Glitteregga or Glitreegga) rises on the south side of Hornindalsvatnet in Nordfjord, Vestland. The municipal border between Stad and Stryn crosses the summit, and it was also the highest point of the former Eid municipality. With Bléegga (1,064 m) and Bergsetnakken (1,133 m) it forms a horseshoe open to the south-west, and its terrain is much gentler than the steep fjord peaks around it.

It is climbed from several sides: on foot from the summer farm Randastøylen above Randabygda, from Holmøyane on the Hornindal side, and on skis from Ålandsleite or Tvinnereimslettene. None of the routes is technical; the challenge is navigation, as the upper slopes are pathless and the summit stays hidden until you are close. On a clear day the view reaches Skåla, Lodalskåpa, Eggenipa and Hornindalsrokken.

Climbing Notes

A half-day outing for anyone used to pathless mountain walking: about 800 m of ascent and roughly 4 hours return from Randastøylen. Carry map and compass or a GPS track; in fog, snow or wind above 1,000 m the upper slopes become featureless, and there are cliffs above Holmøyskaret. Bring cash or a card for the toll road and parking at Randastøylen.

In spring the mountain is a popular, moderate ski tour; ut.no describes a line from Tvinnereimslettene (before the Nos tunnel on Fv698) north past Høgfjellet to Holmøyskardet and along the ridge over points 1154 and 1278, just over 3 hours up. The road to the Ålandsleite sports ground is often closed during the spring thaw.

  • The skeleton range ('Sunnmørsalpene') is wrong: Glitregga is in Nordfjord on the Stad–Stryn border in Vestland, south of Hornindalsvatnet, not in the Sunnmøre Alps.; Route descriptions come from private ut.no entries and a winter trip report; the summer line above Fagredalen is unmarked and only loosely described.; Toll and parking prices were not found.; Westcoastpeaks gives the prominence as 1,053 m; the skeleton value (1,049 m) is kept.
