The Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße between Partenen (Vorarlberg) and Galtür is closed after a rockfall and mudslide in July 2024 and further damage in 2025; illwerke vkw announced it will remain closed to public traffic through 2029 for rerouting and protective dams, reopening planned for summer 2030. The Bielerhöhe remains accessible by road from the Tyrol side (toll-free in summer during the works) and by the Vermuntbahn from Partenen.

A short, popular glacier tour from the Wiesbadener Hütte (2,443 m): a cairned path to the Vermuntgletscher, a 35° firn flank to the west ridge at about 3,060 m, then exposed, bolted scrambling (II, one step up to III-) to the summit where Graubünden, Vorarlberg and Tyrol meet (3,197 m). About 750 m and 2½–3 hours from the hut.

From the Bielerhöhe (2,037 m) follow the east shore of the Silvretta reservoir and the Ochsental, by the forest road or the slightly higher summer path, to the Wiesbadener Hütte (2,443 m), about 2 hours. From the hut a marked, cairned path heads south-east below the Vermuntkopf towards the Obere Ochsenscharte and climbs gently to the Vermuntgletscher; glacier retreat has lengthened this section. On the glacier turn south-west towards the Dreiländerspitze and climb the middle of the firn flank (about 35°), usually in two zigzags, to the west ridge at about 3,060 m. Depending on snow, take to the rock of the ridge; the real ridge begins about 100 m below the summit and mixes demanding walking with scrambling up to II. From the fore-summit an exposed, slabby pitch (graded II+ to III- by the hut section; bypassable on the north side) leads to the summit cross; it has three bolts usable for a belay or handline, and there are further, widely spaced bolts along the ridge. Allow 2½–3 hours from the hut. Descend the same way. In summer the glacier is relatively benign, with crevasses easy to see in high and late summer, but parties should carry glacier kit. Watch for oncoming parties on the narrow final ridge. The route is also a popular spring ski tour, leaving skis at the shoulder of the west ridge.

Overview

A 3,197 m rock peak in the Silvretta where Graubünden, Vorarlberg and Tyrol meet. From the Wiesbadener Hütte it is a short glacier tour with a 35° firn flank and an exposed, bolted rock finish (PD+, II).

The Dreiländerspitze ('three countries' peak') stands on the main Silvretta ridge at the head of the Ochsental and the Jamtal, a few kilometres east of Piz Buin. Its summit is the meeting point of the Swiss canton of Graubünden and the Austrian states of Vorarlberg and Tyrol, marked by a boundary plate. The Vermuntgletscher lies on its north-west side, the Jamtalferner to the east, and the Val Tuoi to the south.

It is one of the most frequently climbed summits around the Wiesbadener Hütte and a good introduction to glacier mountaineering: the glacier section is short and, in summer, relatively benign, the firn flank reaches about 35°, and the final west ridge gives exposed but well-protected scrambling. On fine summer days the narrow summit ridge gets busy.

In spring the same line is a popular ski tour, and the peak features in hut-to-hut ski traverses between the Wiesbadener Hütte, the Jamtalhütte and the Chamanna Tuoi. Glacier retreat has lengthened the walk from the hut to the ice.

Climbing Notes

Requires basic glacier skills (roped travel, crampons, ice axe, crevasse rescue), confidence on 35° firn and the ability to scramble at grade II in exposed terrain; the last pitch is harder (II+ to III-) but bolted. Most parties walk from the Bielerhöhe to the Wiesbadener Hütte (2 hours) on day one and climb the peak the next morning (2½–3 hours up), often combining it with the Silvrettahorn or Piz Buin; a fit party can do it in a long day from the Bielerhöhe (7–10 hours).

Best from late June to mid-September when the hut is open; early in the season the flank is snowier and the ridge may be iced. Start early to have firm snow on the flank and avoid queues on the ridge. Those without glacier experience should go with a mountain guide.

Access has changed: the Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße is closed between Partenen and the Bielerhöhe until 2030, so drive in from Galtür (Tyrol) or use the Vermuntbahn cable car and tunnel bus from Partenen.
