The often-climbed normal route above Kandersteg: from the Doldenhornhütte a marked path and a cabled ledge past the leaning monolith of Bim Spitze Stei to the glacier, then crevassed glacier ramps to the Doldensattel (3,436 m) and a narrow, often icy snow ridge to the top. Long (about 1,730 m from the hut) and highly dependent on crevasse conditions.

Day 1: from Kandersteg follow the road towards the Oeschinensee to point 1340, then the steep hut path (a cabled rock section) through larch forest to the Doldenhornhütte (1,915 m), about 2–3 hours. Day 2: a clear, red-marked path crosses the gentle slopes of Oberer Biberg to point 2202 and climbs a pronounced moraine to point 2406. Traverse left across the Staubbachgraben to the scree ridge below Bim Spitze Stei, a characteristic leaning monolith; pass it on the west side by a horizontal ledge with a steel cable, climb a rock step diagonally right (cables) and reach the scree dome at point 2973, where you step onto the glacier. Watch the paint marks in the dark; the path to Spitze Stei is about T3+. On the glacier, cross longitudinal crevasses at the start, then a first large transverse crevasse (in good snow passable close to the rock wall of the Kleindoldenhorn) and the main crevasse zone at about 3,350–3,400 m, which spans almost the whole ramp and is the crux of the route; it is usually crossed on the east side or in the middle, otherwise turned at the far edges. The Doldensattel (3,436 m) between the Kleindoldenhorn and the Doldenhorn follows quickly. Finish up the often icy final slope and a narrow snow ridge to the summit. SAC gives 5–6 hours from the hut. In late summer the crevasses and a big bergschrund below the saddle can make the route very difficult or impassable. Descend the same way; the couloir variant below the Doldenstock used in spring sees stonefall.

Overview

The Doldenhorn (3,638 m) towers almost 2,500 m directly above Kandersteg. Its normal route from the newly rebuilt Doldenhornhütte is a long PD glacier climb whose difficulty depends mainly on a broad crevasse zone below the Doldensattel.

The Doldenhorn rises at the western end of the Blüemlisalp chain, south-east of Kandersteg, with the Oeschinensee to its north and the Gasterntal to its south. Its north side, a sweep of cliffs, glacier and the steep Staubbachgraben, fills the view from the village. The neighbouring Kleindoldenhorn (3,475 m) is joined to it by the Doldensattel.

The normal route from the north-west starts at the Doldenhornhütte, a small hut among larches 2–3 hours above Kandersteg, rebuilt in 2025 and reopened in 2026. A marked path leads past the leaning monolith of Bim Spitze Stei to the glacier, which then rises in crevassed ramps to the saddle; a narrow snow ridge finishes the climb. The SAC grades it WS (PD), I, with 5–6 hours and 1,730 m from the hut. The route is climbed quite often, but conditions on the glacier vary greatly and late in summer the crevasse zone can become very difficult. The Galletgrat (AD) from the Fründenhütte is the classic harder alternative.

In spring the north-west flank is a steep ski tour, with a narrow 45° couloir below the Doldenstock.

Climbing Notes

You need sound glacier-travel and crevasse-rescue skills, the ability to find a way through a broad crevasse zone, confident cramponing on an often icy final slope and narrow ridge, and the fitness for 1,730 m of ascent in one push. Typical plan: afternoon walk from Kandersteg station to the Doldenhornhütte (2–3 hours), pre-dawn start (watch the paint marks to point 2973 in the dark), 5–6 hours to the summit and a long descent to Kandersteg the same day. Go early in the summer season (June–July) when snow bridges hold; ask the hut about current crevasse conditions. Guides from Kandersteg run the route.

History

Edmund von Fellenberg and Abraham Roth, with Johann Bischof, Kaspar Blatter, Christian and Peter Lauener, Christian Ogi and Gilgian Reichen, made the first ascent on 30 June 1862. Roth described it in 'The Doldenhorn and Weisse Frau' (1863).
