The easy normal route: from the Rosstratte car park at the top of the Villacher Alpenstraße (1,733 m), a broad, partly asphalted service road (trail 291) climbs gently west along the plateau to the Dobratsch-Gipfelhaus (2,143 m) beside the transmitter and the 17th-century summit church, then a few minutes to the summit. About 4.3 km and 430 m up, 1½ hours.

Drive (toll, mid-April to mid-November) or take the summer Naturpark bus up the Villacher Alpenstraße to the last car park at the Rosstratte (1,733 m). Pass the Rosstratten inn and follow the wide track marked with poles (trail 291), asphalt at first and gravel higher up, as it climbs gently across the open, karst plateau of the Villacher Alpe. The 165 m Dobratsch transmitter is visible ahead all the way. The track reaches the Dobratsch-Gipfelhaus (2,143 m), run by the Alpenverein Villach, next to the transmitter and the Deutsche Kirche (Maria am Stein, 1692). The summit (2,166 m) is about 10 minutes and 23 m above the hut. The south side of the massif drops abruptly towards the Gail valley, with views to the Julian Alps and Karawanks. Return the same way; the whole round trip is about 8.7 km and 3–3½ hours. A more interesting but narrower alternative is the Jägersteig (trail 294, T3) along the steep south face, which needs sure-footedness and a head for heights. In winter the service road is groomed and is a popular winter walk; take microspikes or snowshoes and check the forecast, as the plateau offers no shelter in fog or storms.

Overview

Villach's house mountain, the eastern end of the Gailtal Alps in Carinthia: a broad limestone plateau with a 165 m transmitter, a staffed summit hut and a 1692 pilgrimage church on top. A toll road to 1,733 m leaves an easy 1½-hour walk to the summit.

The Dobratsch (2,166 m), also called the Villacher Alpe, rises directly west of Villach at the eastern end of the Gailtal Alps. Its north side is a gently rising plateau of Wetterstein limestone, riddled with some 200 known caves and shafts; its south side breaks off in the Rote Wand, the source of the great landslide of 25 January 1348, when an earthquake in Friuli sent roughly 150 million m³ of rock into the Gail valley. The deposit, the Schütt, is now a protected nature site, and the whole massif has been a nature park since 2002.

The summit is far from wild: the Villacher Alpenstraße climbs to 1,733 m, a broad service road leads on to the summit hut, and the 1971 transmitter tower dominates the top. What makes it worthwhile is the view: with over 1,200 m of prominence and nothing higher nearby, it looks across the Gail valley to the Julian Alps and the Karawanks, and north to the Hohe Tauern.

From the Rosstratte the walk is easy and family-friendly; the Jägersteig along the south face adds some exposure, and long valley routes from Bleiberg, Heiligengeist, Nötsch or Villach (3–5 hours) make it a full mountain day. In winter the groomed track is a classic winter walk.

Climbing Notes

No technical skill is needed on the normal route: it is a 1½-hour walk on a broad track with about 430 m of ascent from the Rosstratte. Plan around the toll road (open all year, toll from mid-April to mid-November) or the summer Naturpark bus from Villach. The Jägersteig (T3) along the south face is the more interesting alternative for sure-footed walkers.

The summit plateau is exposed to wind, fog and thunderstorms, with little shelter apart from the hut. In winter the track is groomed and the Gipfelhaus stays open (weather permitting); bring microspikes or snowshoes and warm layers. The hut has 32 places for those who want to watch sunset or sunrise from the top.

History

The Deutsche Kirche (Maria am Stein) near the summit was built in 1692 by miners from Bleiberg-Kreuth and local farmers and consecrated on 15 August 1693; at about 2,150 m it is described as the highest of the old mountain churches of the Eastern Alps. A second, smaller Windische Kirche stands about 300 m to the west. A shelter built in 1810 became the Ludwig-Walter-Haus in 1921, the year a weather station was set up near the summit; the present Alpenverein Gipfelhaus opened on 20 December 2010. The Villacher Alpenstraße opened up the eastern part of the massif from 1961, the transmitter was built in 1971, and the small ski area closed in 2002 when the nature park was created.
