A popular one-day glacier tour from the Klausenpass road (1,948 m): marked paths over the Tierälpligrat to the Iswändli, a short glacier step onto the crevassed plateau of the Chammlijoch, then east over the fore-summit (P. 3191) and a short rock step on the west ridge protected with heavy chains. About 1,320 m of ascent, 3½–4½ hours up.

From the top of the Klausenpass follow faint paths south towards the Tierälpligrat, then stepped terrain marked with paint and cairns to the foot of the Iswändli at about 2,860 m (about 2 hours). The Iswändli, once a steep ice field and the scene of several fatal accidents, has become much less steep with glacier retreat: today it is a 35° slope of 40–50 m in snow or ice that eases onto the plateau of the Chammlijoch (about 3,000–3,030 m), about 2½ hours from the pass. The flatter glacier above the Iswändli is heavily crevassed, especially in late summer; do not turn left too early. From the Chammlijoch head east up the snowy west ridge and easy scree to the fore-summit (P. 3191). Descend along the ridge into the gap beyond, climb steep snow (30–35°) to where the firn tapers, and about 30 m higher on the right pick up the chains that protect the hard part of the west ridge: good rock with positive holds, never harder than III, and the chains can be used throughout. Easy slopes lead to the summit cross, about 1½ hours from the Chammlijoch and 3½–4½ hours from the pass. Most parties descend the same way (2½–3½ hours). Alternatives are the descent south-east to the Claridenpass and the Planurahütte or the Claridenhütte, or a loop over the south-east slopes back to the Chammlijoch. The west ridge is in full sun, while the Iswändli faces north and can be icy.

Overview

A 3,267 m glaciated summit on the Uri–Glarus border above the Klausenpass and the Urnerboden, with a firn north face visible from the pass road. The normal route is a one-day PD glacier tour from the Klausenpass over the Iswändli, finishing on a chained rock step.

The Clariden rises south of the Klausenpass, between the Urnerboden pastures to the north and the broad Hüfi and Clariden glaciers to the south, in the group of the Glarus Alps north-west of the Tödi. Its north face, still carrying a shrinking ice shield, contrasts with the green pastures below and is the mountain's signature view from the pass road.

Because the road and seasonal PostBus reach 1,948 m, the Clariden is one of the most accessible glaciated 3,000 m summits in central Switzerland and is busy in both summer and winter. The normal route crosses the Iswändli, a glacier step that was once a steep ice field and the scene of several fatal accidents; glacier retreat has made it easier, while the final section from the fore-summit to the main summit has become harder and is now equipped with heavy chains. Other routes come from the Claridenhütte to the east and the Planurahütte to the south, and the north face (AD) is a classic snow and ice climb.

In spring it is a popular ski tour, often combined with the Chammlijoch, the Gross Schärhorn or a traverse to the Planurahütte.

Climbing Notes

A good first glacier peak for fit parties who know how to travel roped on a glacier and use crampons; the chained rock step is short and the rock is good. Expect 1,320 m of ascent and 6–8 hours for the round trip. A guide is advisable for those without glacier experience.

Start before dawn from the Klausenpass (accommodation at the pass hotels) so as to cross the glacier while the snow is firm. The crevasses above the Iswändli open up in late summer, and the Iswändli and the summit slopes can be icy, so take crampons and an ice axe throughout the season. The Klausenpass road and PostBus run only in summer; outside that period the approach is long.

History

First climbed on 13 August 1863 by Eugène Rambert with the guide Emmanuel Streiff, the porter Gabriel Stüssi and a companion, ascending the east side and descending the south-west side, during the first official excursion of the newly founded Swiss Alpine Club; Rambert had reportedly set out for the Schärhorn. The west ridge, today's normal finish, was first climbed on 5 August 1901 by Hans Brun, H. Pfister and Fr. Weber.
