A three-day trek-and-scramble: from the village of Pkhiya over the Azhoga pass (2,648 m) to the Atsgara 'Five Lakes', north along a spur of the Zagedan ridge over the Urup-Zagedan pass (2,700 m, 1A) to the Urup lakes, then up a steep rock-and-scree slope to the south top and on to the 3,232 m main summit, about 200 m further. Grade estimated.

Pkhiya, at the end of a new road from Arkhyz (partly asphalted by 2024), has parking by the border-guard post and mobile coverage only near the village shop. Walk up tracks and paths to a dilapidated shepherds' hut at the foot of the Zagedan ridge (a long half-day from the village). Above it, cattle paths soon fade into knee-deep grass: climb several steps straight up to the ridge above the upper Bolshaya Azhoga valley, then follow the crest right to the Azhoga (Urup-Azhoga) pass, 2,648 m, unclassified, and descend to the Atsgara 'Five Lakes' (Pyatiozerye). A 2024 party took less than a day from Pkhiya to the lakes, about 10 km, with no path for much of the second morning. From the lakes, follow the wind-swept northern spur of the Zagedan ridge north, alternately gaining and losing height; the crest narrows to a few metres in places. Pass the easy Urup-Zagedan pass (2,700 m, 1A) and drop to the Urup lakes, a cluster of tarns below Zagedan (3,095 m); camp at the upper lake. Urup rises to the east over Sedaya (3,102 m). Urup has two tops. A 2018 group climbed from a camp on the bouldery slope at its foot directly up a steep rock-and-scree slope to the south top and judged the 200 m crossing to the higher main summit too dangerous in rain. Allow a long morning for the ascent and a full day back to Pkhiya, or return over the Zagedan ridge to the Atsgara lakes.

    Overview

A 3,232 m double-topped rock-and-scree summit at the junction of the Zagedan and Abishira-Akhuba ranges west of Arkhyz, rising above the Urup lakes at the source of the river it is named after. A remote lake-country objective with no marked path.

Urup stands in Karachay-Cherkessia on a northern spur of the Zagedan ridge, near where it meets the Abishira-Akhuba range, and is one of the highest summits of this lake-studded corner of the Western Caucasus. Its slopes are rock and scree with patches of moss; it has two tops, the higher at 3,232 m. From the summit you see Atsgara, both Chilik peaks, Shkhuanta, Zagedan, Mamkhurts and the Imeretinsky massif.

The mountain sits above three groups of lakes that draw trekkers in July and August: the Atsgara 'Five Lakes', the Zagedan 'Two Lakes' and the Urup lakes below Zagedan. The usual approach is now from the village of Pkhiya, reached by a new road from Arkhyz, over the Zagedan ridge. Tur and Caucasian snowcock are often seen on Urup's slopes.

Few parties climb it: the summit is an add-on to lake treks, and the one ascent report we found reached only the lower south top. Expect pathless ground, steep loose slopes and quickly changing weather.

    Climbing Notes

Plan three to four days from Pkhiya: to the shepherds' hut at the foot of the Zagedan ridge, over the Azhoga pass to the Atsgara lakes, along the ridge to the Urup lakes, then the summit and the walk out. You need to carry everything, navigate without paths and move confidently on steep scree and broken rock. Go only in settled weather, as rain makes the summit crossing dangerous. Carry your passport; there is a border-guard post in Pkhiya. Check current travel advice for Russia before going.
