The traditional ascent of Montseny's highest summit: from Can Casades at Santa Fe (about 1,140 m) the waymarked PR-C 208 climbs through beech and fir woods past the Font de Passavets and Font del Briançó to the open, windy summit and its observatory. Usually an 11 km loop over Les Agudes, 600–750 m of ascent, 4–5 hours.

Start at the Can Casades information point and car park at km 21 of the BV-5114 (Sant Celoni–Viladrau) in the Santa Fe valley, beside the three sequoias. A path parallel to the road leads to the Passavets car park and the Font de Passavets, an alternative start. The PR-C 208 then climbs through humid beech woods and the fir forest of Passavets, crossing small torrents, to the Font del Briançó, where a branch climbs to Les Agudes (1,705 m). Bear left at the Font del Briançó for the final climb on to the open, juniper-covered summit dome of the Turó de l'Home (1,706 m), past the black slate outcrop of the Rocs Cremats. The summit carries a geodetic vertex, a meteorological observatory and a memorial to the meteorologist Eduard Fontserè; the view takes in Matagalls, the Pla de la Calma, Montserrat and the Pyrenees, and on very clear days Mallorca. Most walkers make a loop: from the summit follow the broad ridge north-west past the Coll de Sesbasses, the Turó de l'Home Mort and the Coll Sacarbassa to the Collada de Sesagudes and Les Agudes, then descend steeply through beech woods to the Font del Briançó and the Font de Passavets back to Santa Fe. The Diputació de Barcelona gives 11.5 km and about 5 hours for the PR-C 208; one club recorded 10.2 km, 750 m and 3 h 50 min moving time for the loop.

Overview

The highest summit of the Montseny massif (1,706 m), a rounded, juniper-covered dome north-east of Barcelona with a historic meteorological observatory. A waymarked half-day loop from Santa Fe del Montseny through beech and fir woods links it with its twin, Les Agudes.

Turó de l'Home ('the man's hill') crowns the Montseny massif in the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Natural Park between Barcelona, Vic and Girona. With Les Agudes (1,705 m) it forms the high ridge of the eastern Montseny, rising more than 1,100 m above its surroundings; its profile is said to resemble a man lying down. Below the summit meadows the slopes hold beech woods and the fir forests of Passavets, among the southernmost in the Iberian Peninsula.

The classic walk is the PR-C 208 from Santa Fe del Montseny: a 4–5 hour loop of about 11 km and up to 750 m of ascent, on good paths with no technical difficulty. The summit has a geodetic vertex, the meteorological observatory and a memorial to its founder Eduard Fontserè; antennas stand on the neighbouring Puig Sesolles. A road leads up from the Fontmartina side, but cars are restricted near the top.

The massif is close to Barcelona and very busy in autumn, when the park regulates access at weekends. Weather changes quickly on the exposed ridge: fog, wind, thunderstorms and, in winter, snow and ice, when the park closes the summit road.

Climbing Notes

Any fit walker can do the PR-C 208 loop in 4–5 hours. Wear boots, carry a rain jacket and a warm layer for the windy summit, and take at least 1.5 litres of water because the springs can dry up. In winter the summit dome can be icy and the road is closed after snowfall. On autumn weekends and holidays (10 October–8 December in 2026) park at the Fogars de Montclús reception point and use the Bus Parc to Santa Fe, or arrive very early; the Can Casades car park holds about 74 cars. Dogs must be kept on a lead in the park.

History

The meteorological observatory on the summit, associated with the meteorologist Eduard Fontserè i Riba, is one of the best-known landmarks of the massif; a memorial to Fontserè stands beside it. The PR-C 208 revives one of the most traditional excursionist routes of the Santa Fe valley.
