Routes
1The classic ascent of Suva Planina's highest summit: from the Studenac hut at Bojanine vode (about 860 m) on a cart road and the 'Kraljev put' forest path to the Devojački grob saddle (1,311 m), then a steep climb of 500 m up the open, rocky ridge to Trem (1,810 m). About 7.5 km and 950 m of ascent; 3–4 hours up, about 3 hours down.

Bojanine vode is reached from Niška Banja by a narrow paved road through Jelašnica, Čukljenik and Donja and Gornja Studena; the regular bus from Niš stops at Gornja Studena, about 5 km (an hour's walk) short of the start. From the Studenac mountain hut follow the cobbled cart road for about 2 km to the Ljubina česma spring (about 1,100 m), then turn right onto the 'Kraljev put' path, which climbs through beech forest, steeply in its last part, to the open saddle of Devojački grob (1,311 m), 4.2 km from the hut; allow about an hour from the spring. At the saddle, the path to Sokolov kamen goes right (west); turn left (east) for Trem. The final section gains 500 m in a short distance up the grassy and rocky crest above the steep northern escarpment, starting with improvised steps beside a handrail; allow about an hour. From the summit the edge of the ridge continues east to Đorđina čuka (1,735 m, about 40 minutes). Descend the same way in about 3 hours. The only reliable drinking water is at Bojanine vode. The summit ridge is very windy and cold even in summer, and the crest is exposed to the north. In December 2025 many fallen trees obstructed the forest path.

The highest summit of Suva Planina (1,810 m), a long limestone ridge east of Niš whose northern side drops in cliffs while the south is a gentle karst plateau. A popular, steep half-day hike from the Bojanine vode picnic area, with views from Kopaonik to Rila.
Suva Planina ('dry mountain') runs about 35–45 km from Niška Banja south-east towards Babušnica, between the Nišava valley and the Lužnica basin. It is a karst ridge with almost no surface water: the north face is a steep escarpment above beech forest, while the southern slopes are open grassland. Trem is the highest point, followed along the crest by Đorđina čuka (1,735 m), Golemo stražište (1,713 m) and Litica (1,683 m); to the west lie Sokolov kamen (1,523 m) and the climbing crag of Mosor.
The usual ascent starts at Bojanine vode, about 25 km from Niš, and climbs through forest to the saddle of Devojački grob before a steep final 500 m on the open crest. On clear days the summit view takes in Kopaonik, Jastrebac, Rtanj, Stara Planina, Ljuboten in the Šar mountains and, to the east, Vitoša and Rila in Bulgaria.
Suva Planina is a special nature reserve. A traditional organised winter ascent of Trem is held each year in late February.
Climbing Notes
Fit hikers need about 3 hours up and 3 hours down from Bojanine vode, with about 950 m of ascent. Carry all your water — there is none above the spring at Bojanine vode — and a warm windproof layer for the summit ridge, where strong cold wind is common even in summer. The steep, rocky section above Devojački grob is no easier in descent; keep well back from the edge of the northern escarpment in fog.
In winter the crest is snow-covered and icy; crampons or microspikes and an ice axe are advisable, and short days make the descent through the forest slow, especially when fallen trees block the path. The Studenac hut at Bojanine vode is the base for most ascents. Longer options include the marked ridge route from Niška Banja over Mosor and Sokolov kamen (29.5 km, about 8 hours).
